"School Spirit" starts off with a "Breakfast Club" type setup. A group of kids from different backgrounds have to stay for weekend detention. They include: Lizzy, Russ, Vic, Brett and Harvard bound class president Erica. What is she doing here?
They are supervised by Mr Armstrong-- a grouchy old alcoholic vice principal who doesnt want to be there either. We learn that a teacher died (after some kids pulled a prank on her). They then hid her body in the basement. It is supposedly her ghost that haunts the school. True or urban legend? Hopefully we'll find out. The killer dresses as the Admiral (the school mascot) for some reason. Whatever. Yada, yada, yada. The usual happens. The kids are separated and knocked off one by one until the killer is revealed. The end.
Unfortunately there's nothing new here. We're seen this horror setup a million times. None of the characters are that likeable either... so there's no one to root for. There's a final girl but she doesnt get that much to do. On a positive note, Annie Q's performance as Erica is the best of the movie.
Grade: 3 Monsters (out of 5). "Into The Dark's" offerings have been a mixed bag. For me, "School Spirit" and "They Come Knocking" are at the bottom. Last month's entry "Culture Shock", "New Year, New You", and "Down" are tops thus far. Let's hope next month's is better.
