Into The Dark Season 2 Finale: Two Covid-Delayed Episodes Finish Out Season 2

The last two episodes of season 2 of "Into The Dark" finally dropped. Like most things over the past year, they were delayed by Covid

As a refresher, the Hulu/Blumhouse series "Into The Dark" features a horror-centric movie based on a holiday in that month. See my previous reviews here

"Tentacles" arrived just in time for Valentine's Day. It tells the story of two people-- Sam (a photographer) and Tara (somewhat of a mystery). They rush into a relationship. There are lots of sexy times and everything's great in the beginning. But things quickly disintegrate. Sam's bestie suggests they're moving too fast. Sam suffers from health problems (including bad ear aches). An ex is stalking Tara. I wont give away the ending but you see where it's going. While I thought the movie went on way too long I thought they stuck the ending. "Tentacles" illustrates what happens when happily ever after turns into a Lovecraftian nightmare.

"Blood Moon" celebrates the first day of Spring. Mother (Esme) and son (Luna) are on the run after some sort of incident. Esme will do anything to protect her son.. It's not hard to figure out the premise. I guessed it in the first five minutes. This led to the rest of the story being a bit of a letdown. Good acting (especially by Megalyn Echikunwoke as Esme) but the story unfortunately never goes anywhere else.

CONCLUSION: "Into The Dark" as a whole suffers from two major flaws: 1, Many of the entries start off with an interesting premise but never do anything with them. With a few tweaks some of the mediocre episodes could be much better. 2. The runtime of most of the entries is WAY too long. They take what might a good 40 minutes entry and double it with unnecessary scenes and dialogue. This doesnt hold the attention of those of us who have seen a million horror movies and just want to get to the action.

But amongst many of the so so episodes of season 2, there are still some great ones. My favorites are:  "Pilgrim" (Thanksgiving), and "A Nasty Piece of Work" (Christmas). They join season 1's "Culture Shock" (Independence Day) as being the best the series has to offer.

Is this the end of "Into The Dark". At this point, I think the series had played itself out so it might be time to move onto other projects. It was an interesting exercise-- even if the series never lived up to it's potential.
