"Wynonna Earp Vengeance" Review: A Gift To Earpers Everywhere

The 90 minute special "Wynonna Earp Vengeance" is currently viewable on Tubi. This is a rare move for Tubi since they have previously only had one original scripted series. Tubi mostly runs older TV shows and some documentaries.

The four seasons of "Wynonna Earp: previously aired on SyFy from 2016 to2021. "Vengeance" is definitely a love letter to the super active "Earper" fan base. If you havent watched the TV series, I'm not sure the special will make much sense. But for the "Earpers" it's pure gold. The show's main premise is a strange one. Wynonna Earp is the great great granddaughter of the famous lawman Wyatt Earp. Each time an heir of Earp hits their 27th birthday, all the demons that Earp and descendants killed resurrect and wreak havoc on the small town of Purgatory (located near the Canadian border).  Good news is the demons (sometimes called revenants) cant leave the area. Bad news is the residents of Purgatory are threatened with all manner of supernatural craziness. The only way to send the demons back to hell is with a long barreled Colt 45 revolver named Peacemaker. So basically each week Wynonna and crew battle a new demon.

Luckily for us all the major cast members return for the special. They are Melanie Scrofano as Wynonna, Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday, Dom Provost-Chalkley as Waverly and Katherine Barrell as Nicole Haught. We also get appearances by Wynonna frenemy Mercedes, Nedley and Jeremy. Emily Andras returns as writer. She is responsible for all the great dialogue and Gen Z zingers. Paolo Barzman returns to direct. He did a number of the previous episodes. I must say the show has the same look and feel as the original episodes. There are vast snowy expanses. You can definitely feel the isolation at times.

At the beginning of the special we find Wynonna and Doc still together and trying to scam casinos (so they can get baby Alice and start a new life as a family). Waverly is sporting a new hairdo. She and Nicole are still very much in love. However Waverly has been in Purgatory her entire life and wants to get out and experience the rest of the world. Nicole doesnt recognize she is holding Waverly back until Wynonna tells her. She reluctantly agrees.

The demon is eventually dispatched. SPOILER ALERT: Just when it looks like they will live happily ever after, Doc is shot and dies in Wynonna's arms. How sad. Do you think, if there are future episodes of "WE", they can bring him back? I hope so. Not sure why they chose this direction with the character (unless Tim Rozon decided he was done playing Doc for good) In the meantime Wynonna settles back into life in Purgatory and Waverly leaves to be Jeremy's research assistant. Have no fear though. I believe Wayhaught can survive a few months apart. They are endgame in my book.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). I just love this crazy little show. It doesnt really matter to me if the story makes sense or not. When did it ever? Seeing the characters interact is enough to keep me coming back. Hopefully this is not the last we've seen of our favorite demon fighters.
