Only Murders In The Building Seasons 2-4 Review: A Little Long in the Tooth But Still Great Fun!

There are currently 4 seasons of "Only Murders In The Building" available on Hulu. The show began in 2021 and was created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman. It has garnered critical acclaim with nominations for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, Golden Globe for Best Television Series- Musical or Comedy as well as others. The three leads have also been nominated for Golden Globes and Primetime Emmy Awards.

Spoilers Ahead: Turn Back Now If You Haven't Seen Seasons 2-4 of "Only Murders In The Building"

To catch you up to speed, the show follows three residents of the Arconia Building in New York as they try to solve the murders that occur around them. Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Salina Gomez) team up for some murder mystery fun. They start a podcast (which has the same name as the series). It builds a rabid fan base as more and more people tune in.

Below are the basics of each season. See my season 1 review here

  • Season 1 centers around the murder of Tim Kona (a resident of the Arconia).
  • Season 2 showcases the murder of long time resident and board president  Bunny Folger Jayne Houdyshell has some great acting chops
  • Season 3 focuses on the murder of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) who is starring in Oliver's new Broadway show "Death Rattle Dazzle". Since he's such a jerk, everyone around has cause to want him dead.
  • Season 4 involves the murder of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch). She was Charles' stunt double for his TV series Brazos. Was the bullet meant for Charles instead?

One great thing about the series is all the famous guest stars who drop by. I've hopefully included most below:

Season 1:

  • Tina Fey (as competing podcaster Cinda Canning) and Adina Vernon (as her assistant Poppy)-- recurring role
  • Jane Lynch as Sazz Pataki (Charles' stunt double)-- recurring role
  • Sting (cameo as himself)
  • Jan (Amy Ryan)- Charles' girlfriend-- recurring role
  • Nathan Lane (Teddy Dumas)- resident of the Arconia-- recurring role
  • Davine Joy Randolph (Detective Donna Williams)-- recurring role
  • Umma Heller (Jackie Hoffman)- Bunny's BFF and Arconia resident

Season 2:

  • Paul Rudd
  • Shirley McClaine (as Bunny's mom)
  • Amy Shumer
  • Broadway producer duo of Donna (Linda Emond) and son Cliff (Wesley Taylor)
  • Cara Delevinge
  • Andrea Martin (makeup artist on "Brazzos")
  • Mel Brooks
  • Michael Rapport (as Detective Daniel Kreps)

Season 3:

  • Meryl Streep (as Loretta Durkin-- Oliver's girlfriend)-- recurring role
  • Jesse Williams (from "Gray's Anatomy")
  • Matthew Broderick (cameo as himself)

Season 4:

  • The Brothers sisters (producers of the film based on the "Only Murders" podcast
  • Mollie Shannon as Bev Melon (a studio exec)
  • Eugene Levy- portrays Charles in the film
  • Zach Gallfianakis- portrays Olivers in the film
  • Eva Longoria- portrays Mabel in film
  • Ron Howard (cameo as himself)
  • Screenwriter Marsha  P. Pope (Jin Ha)
  • Richard Kind, Kumail Nanjiani  (members of a group called "The Westies" who live in the building
  • Melissa McCarthy (Oliver's younger sister Doreen)
  • John McEnroe (cameo as himself)
  • Paul Rudd again (as Glen Stubbins- Ben's stunt double)

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Getting a little long in the tooth but I'm still enjoying the great cast (especially the three main leads). We've grown to care about these lonely characters over the course of the series. And you never know who will pop up as a guest star. Season 5 is planned so this isn't the last time we'll see of our favorite amateur detective/true crime podcasters.
