Alien: Earth Season 1 Review: Loving This New Take on the "Alien" Franchise

Season 1 of "Alien: Earth" is currently viewable on Hulu. There are 8 episodes. The TV series is set two years before the events of the "Alien" movie.

It's 2120. Earth and the known Universe are controlled by 5 corporations. They are:

  1. Weyland-Yutani- we have seen their ruthlessness previously in the other "Alien" movies
  2. Prodigy- led by Kid Kavalier
  3. Dynamic
  4. Lynch
  5. Threshold

As the series opens, a space ship called the USCSS Matinot (owned by Weyland-Yutani) crash lands on Earth. It lands in New Siam (which is a city controlled by Prodigy). They will not let WY retrieve their ship and it's cargo. Several people are sent to investigate the crash (including a young woman named Wendy).

On Earth, the Prodigy Corporation (led by CEO Boy Kavalier) is starting to experience with artificial life. There are 3 main types:

  1. Cyborgs- humans with biomechanical body parts
  2. Synthetics- intelligence artificial humans
  3. Hybrids- human consciousness transferred into synthetic bodies. Wendy and several other terminally ill children are the first hybrids. They are all named after characters from "Peter Pan".
Several Xenomorphs are taken to Neverland (Prodigy's research island) to be studied. Joe (Wendy's human brother) is also taken there. He was seriously injured by a xenomorph. Morrow, the YT security officer aboard the crashed ship, contacts HQ and vows to get the specimens back. Wendy discovers she can communicate with the Xenomorphs audibly. She can also control anything connected to the Prodigy tech network.

Morrow contacts Slightly (via an implanted device). He tells Slightly if he does not bring Morrow an alien egg, his family will be hurt. Slightly ends up luring Arthur to the lab where he is impregnated by an alien. Slightly and Smee try to get Arthur's body to the beach to give to Morrow. That doenst work. An alien bursts out of his chest and scurries away. Meanwhile the "ocellus" (its looks like an eyeball attached to a little octopus body) takes up house in Arthur's dead body.

Now seems to be a good time to go over the various aliens. Therewere 5 types aboard the ship:
  1. The typical aliens- including the adult xenomorphs, eggs, facehuggers, chestbusters but no alien queen (so far)
  2. Insect like blood sucking parasites
  3. The Oculus- the small eyeball octopus that likes to occupy other creature's bodies and replaces one of it's eyes
  4. Massive Venus flytrap type plants
  5. A missing specimen that we havent seen yet

Wendy, Joe and the other hybrids become disillusioned by Boy's treatment. He tells them they are not humans but are his property.

YT soldiers secretly arrive at the island. There is a battle. Wendy, Joe, Nibs, Curly, Slightly and Smee lock the rest--Kid, Kirsh (a synth), Atom (a cyborg), Dame and Morrow (a cyborg) in a cell. It is guarded by Xenomorphs. Wendy says to the others "Now we rule"... and end of season.

Grade: 4 3/4 Monsters (out of 5).The series is a slow burn but pays off in the end. Its not just about xenomorphs killing people. It's also about what it means to be human and to be humane. It forces the audience to think about who the real monsters are-- aliens or humans? The best part of the show is the new aliens. My favorite is of course the eyeball octopus-- truly menacing but very cute at the same time. "Alien Earth" has been renewed for a season 2. It is planned for release in 2027. Why so long? I guess due to the heavy specific effects needed to make all the aliens. Cant wait to see what else this show has in store.
