Warning: Heavy Spoilers Ahead. Turn back now if you havent seen season 6 of "What We Do In the Shadows".
For those who arent's in the know, "WWDTS" is about a group of vampires trying to live their best lives in a nondescript house on Staten Island. The TV series is based on the 2014 movie by the same name. That followed a group of different flat mate vamps in New Zealand.
The vampires in the sitcom are: Nandor The Relentless, Nadja of Antipaxos, and Laszlo Cravensworth. There's also Colin Robinson. He's a different kind of vampire. He's an energy vampire.
Guillermo previously served as Nandor's familiar and took care of everyone. They later found out he was a descendent of Van Helsing (the sworn enemy of vamps). That caused some problems that were eventually resolved. Guilllermo wanted to become a vampire himself (but Nandor kept blowing him off). Be careful what you wish for. Guillermo was made a vamp by someone else. He then decided it wasnt all it was cracked up to be. At his request, Nandor changed Guillermo back into a human.
When the final season begins, Guillermo is living out back in the shed. He's still working at Paneras. The vamps remember they had a fifth roommate (Jerry) who went into a super slumber and they forgot to wake him up in 1996.
Jerry is a bit of a pain. He wants to know why the trio havent taken any steps to conquer the New World. He also wants to know why the human camera crew is in the house filming them.
Laszlo continues his experiment to regenerate a cadaver (while claiming he's never heard of Dr Frankenstein). Lazlo and Colin search for a head for the Monster. Luckily, Colin is an Uber driver. The Monster is finally complete but he's very erratic. He pulls off Jerry's head. They are then chased by the rest of the tri-state vamps. We also get a guest cameo from Alexander Skarsgard ("True Blood's vamp Eric). Cool!
Guillermo takes a new job and quickly rises through the ranks (thanks to the vamp's interference). They believe that if he does not succeed, he will come back to the house and kill them all. This bit was fun but it was a missed opportunity to talk about corporate blood suckers.
The series finale has the camera crew leaving after six years. Guillermo is devastated. The rest of the vamps dont care. In fact they already have another film made about them years ago. And they were all doing the same stuff then. Nothing really changes for the vamps. They have not grown wiser. No life lessons have been learned. That must be what eternal life is like-- the same old, same old every day.
In order to keep Guillermo happy, Nadja says she will hypnotize the audience into forgetting about them. We see three possible alternate endings: 1. "The Usual Suspects" spoof with Colin Robinson playing Keyser Soze. 2. A "Newhart" type ending where Nandor is in bed with his spouse (who turns out to be Gizmo). Nandor dreams of the plot of "WWDTS". 3. A reenactment of the final scene of "Rosemary's Baby" with Nadja as Rosemary. I love all the endings but the "Rosemary's Baby" one hit it out of the park
In the end, Nandor and Guillermo agree to be friends. Then it's revealed that Nandor actually created the underground crime fighting lair they had talked about. It's off to new adventures for the Phantom Menace and the Cowboy Kid. And what ending could be better?
Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Did the plot of "WWDTS" often not make sense? Yep. Did story lines fizzle out never to be seen again. Yep. But who cares. I just loved following these freaks from one hilarious situation/gag to another. Some of my favorites were: the Vampiric Council (great cameos by Tilda Swinton, Wesley Snipes, Paul Rubens, Evan Rachel Wood and of course Taika Waititi), storylines with the Baron (Doug Jones) and Jim The Vampire (Mark Hamill), scenes with Colin Robinson being an energy vampire (especially his battles with girlfriend/archenemy Evie), any scenes where the group changes into a bat (by just yelling "bat"), and storylines with the Guide (who became a regular in season 4). Who knew this little sitcom would be so much fun?
