The Catch Series Finale Review: The Family That Steals/Murders/Pillages Together...

This is unfortunately the last we'll see of "The Catch". Not even it's ShondaLand status could save the show from cancellation. It's a shame since I surprisingly enjoyed "TC". It's smart, sexy and just plain fun.

Season 1 was a cat and mouse game between Alice Vaughn (co-owner of AVI Detective Agency) and her con fiance whose real name is Ben Jones. Ben stole her life savings and her self respect. See my review here: The Catch Season 1 Overview

In season 2 the Kensington's (That's what i'm calling the family even though their actual name is Griffiths) take center stage. There's crime boss/mother Sybil who is in jail most of the season. There's adult children Rhys (John Simms) and Margot (Sonya Walger). The two are my favorite parts of the show. We need MUCH more Sonya on TV. I also enjoyed seeing Mireille Eros in a VASTLY different role from  Sarah Linden in "The Killing". It's hard to believe she's the same person.

Season 2 opens with Margot trying to corral the Kensington Firm with limited success. Ben is in jail (after taking the fall last year in order to protect Alice). Ben is stabbed but it turns out to be a plan masterminded by Rhys. Meanwhile FBI agent Justine Diaz (played by the always wonderful Gina Torres) wants the help of both men in exchange for their freedom. If they screw up, it's back to the Big House.

All number of interesting alliances emerge. Alice and Ben are still very much in love but once obstacle after another delay their "happy ever after". Alice's ex finance arrives. Ethan is handsome, rich and still has feeling for her. Will Alice reciprocate? A teenage daughter arrives (much to the surprise of Ben who didnt know she existed). Margot had secretly given the child up long ago. Tessa is quite a handful as she try to out-con her parents.

Margot continues what appears to be a master plan of sleeping with everyone on the show. Besides her on again/off again with Ben, she also beds top lieutenant Jameson. Then there's Felicity who was previously sent by Rhys to assassinate her. More on Felicity later. Margot also starts a relationship with Danny (one of Alice's employees). He wants more but she's not a monogamy kinda girl. Danny manages to tame her somewhat when she finally agrees that they're dating.

Now back to Felicity. Rhys supposedly killed last year but now she's alive and well. We're still not sure how she survived. Felicity now has it in for the brother and sister. Sure, I can see why Felicity wants to kill Rhys but what's she got in for Margot? They seemed to be having a pretty good time of it. Felicity wants control of the Kensington Firm and suprise... She is the one that found Tessa and shared her true identity. The two have been playing the long game. But Tessa, after meeting her family, doesnt have the heart to kill them and turns on Felicity.

Is that wasnt enough family craziness, Alice's brother Tommy pops in and out of  Los Angeles. Early in the season he shows up due to a large amount of money that somehow ends up in his bank account. When a mysterious man called "Mockingbird" steals the Firm away from Margot before Felicity can, he surfaces again. No one believes he's Mockingbird though because he doesnt seem smart enough to be an evil genius. Indeed he's not because Mockingbird turns out to be... wait for it... he turns out the be Rhys. That dude never gives up does he? Rhys hides from the FBI as Danny arranges a plane for Margot and Tessa to leave the country. Ben plans to say but Alice doesnt want him to go back to jail so sends him off on the same plane.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). A few parts of the finale were cheesy but overall I really enjoyed the show (especially Margot and Rhys). Too bad ABC canceled it. I think "The Catch" had at least one more good season in it and I'm still up for learning more about this crazy crime family.
