DC Extended Universe Overview

With this year's offerings, the DC Extended Universe hopes to chip away at some of Marvel's box office supremacy. The jury is still out for many (including myself) on if Warner Brothers/DC can achieve this goal. Meanwhile DC TV series (most are currently on CW) have proven quite popular. They include: "Supergirl", "Arrow", "Flash", "Legends Of Tomorrow", "iZombie" and the newest "Black Lightening".  Also dont forget "Preacher" (AMC), "Lucifer" (Fox), and "Gotham" (Fox).

Lots more TV shows are in development including "Krypton" (scheduled to be released on SyFy in 2018). In years past, "Smallville", "Lois & Clark" (Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher), "Wonder Woman" (Lynda Carter) and "Batman" (Adam West) all proved immensely popular.

Movies released thus far include:
  • Justice League (2017)- Batman, Wonder Woman and an undead Superman are joined by Cyborg, Flash and Aquaman. They team up to fight baddie Steppenwolf. The movie was originally directed by Zack Snyder (who had to exit due to a family emergency). Joss Whedon took his place and did various reshoots. The film has been criticized for it's lack of continuity (and the fact that Cavill's mustache was less than convincingly CGI'ed out of the picture). On Rotten Tomatoes the show gets a 40% from critics and a 77% from audiences. One main criticism is that the characters are just thrown together without thought of creating a decent story. Spinoffs "Aquaman" and "Cyborg" are scheduled for release in 2018 and 2020 respectively. Next up after that are "Shazam!" (2019) and "Green Lantern Corps" (2020). A number of other projects are also in various stages of development but dont have release dates. They include: "The Batman", "Batgirl" and "Suicide Squard 2".
  • Wonder Woman (2017)- "WW" became the highest grossing superhero ORIGIN STORY of all time with $821 million in revenue. It also made history as the highest grossing movie directed by a female (Patty Jenkins). The show has a 92% from critics and an 88% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. I really enjoyed "WW" (Gal Gadot was perfect) and cant wait for "Wonder Woman 2" (which is scheduled for release in 2019).
  • Suicide Squad (2016)- A gang of misfits is recruited by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to complete a top secret mission. The crew includes: Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Joker, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, Killer Croc, Enchantress, Katana, Rick Flagg and Slipknot. On Rotten Tomatoes the show gets an abysmal 26% from critics but a much better 60% from audiences.
  • Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice (2016)- Batman is mad at Superman and wants to take him down. Lex Luther (who now seems to have Aspergers flitters about). Lois Lane hangs around but doesnt have much to do. Wonder Woman makes an appearance. Superman is killed by Doomsday but we know that wont last. I must say I surprisingly enjoyed both Ben Afleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman. The movie was directed by Zack Snyder. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 27% from critics and a 63% from audiences.
  • Man Of Steel (2013)- This movie introduces Henry Cavill as the reimagined Superman. Amy Adams takes on the role of Lois Lane. The movie was directed by Zack Snyder. Audiences were still not particularly wowed by it despite the action. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 55% and 75%.
  • Christopher Nolan's Dark Night Trilogy. This includes: Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Christopher Bale serves as Batman is this series.
  • Other Batman related movies include: Catwoman (2004), Batman & Robin (1997), Batman Returns (1995), Batman Forever (1992), and Batman (1966).The role of Batman is played by George Clooney, Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton (2 movies). Catwoman is portrayed by Halle Berry.
  • Superman movies include: SuperGirl (1984), Superman Returns (2006), Steel (1997), Superman IV (1987), Superman III (1983), Superman II (1980), Superman (1978). The role of Superman is played by Christopher Reeves in I, II, III, and IV. Brandon Rough played him in Superman Returns. SuperGirl is portrayed by Helen Slater.
  • Other stand alone character movies include: Green Lantern (2011), Jonah Hex (2010), Watchmen (2009), V For Vendetta (2006), Constantine (2005), and The Return Of The Swamp Thing (1989).
