Channel Zero: The Dream Door Premiere Review: I Have No Idea What's Going On But It's Super Freaky
The newest season of "Channel Zero" is upon us. For those not in the know, the SyFy anthology series is based on the Internet's creepypastas (source of Slender Man as well as lots of other scary stories). If this season is anything like "No-End House" and "Butcher's Block", I'm all in. See my previous reviews here. Unlike other seasons, "TDD's" six episodes will air nightly with the finale being on Halloween.
In the latest story, Tom and Jillian are a newly married couple. They move back into Tom's childhood home. Things get weird when they discover a door in the basement where one previously didnt exist.
After some major work, they manage to open it-- just to find another locked door at the bottom of some steps. Jillian eventually figures out that she needs to touch the hand print on the door. It unlocks. In the otherwise empty room is someone/something with his back turned. All of a sudden it runs full steam towards Jill and out the door.
We see Jill speaking with her therapist. She has trust issues steaming from her father. Now Jill suspects Tom is cheating on her. We also learn that as a child Jill had an imaginary protector named Pretzel Jack. He was a contortionist clown. See there's your first mistake. Never trust a clown (and especially not a contortionist clown)! What's wrong with you people?
There's also a new door neighbor named Ian. He's renting the house and working on his PhD in Jungian psychology. I guess he's there to try to explain what Jill is seeing? Just to be safe, we still shouldnt trust the guy till we know more about him.
Is the creature in the room a manifestation of Jill's psyche? It looks very similar to the picture below.
Jill goes to see Tom's bestie. Is he cheating on her? The discussion becomes heated. Jason tells Jill she has some mental issues. The same creature appears again and brutally (I mean BRUTALLY) slaughters Jason. He then does a few back flips and heads out of the room again. What the hell just happened? Is he protecting her? Did Jill kill Jason herself and her mind blamed it on the clown? Very strange indeed.
Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). It's too early to tell but so far "The Dream Door" is off to a great start. There were several heart pounding scenes and I'm a sucker for a great mystery. Let's hope the show can keep up it's momentum.
