Black Lightning Season 2 Review: Murders And Resurrections Abound In Season 2

Season 2 of "Black Lightning" is currently available on NetFlix. The show is definitely not short on murders, resurrections and more murders this time around. If you havent watched the 13 episodes turn back now.

Here's the highlights:
  • In a shocking turn of events, Khalil/Painkiller is dead after turning on Tobias (and running off with Jennifer). More on that later.
  • Gambi is dead via a car explosion. He is later revealed to be alive though.
  • We need the Perdi and the Sange (who are lead by Looker). Is it just me or did they disappear never to be mentioned again?
  • Speaking of disappearing, Grace is gone. Anissa finds a pill in her apartment. She's taking a drug for schizophrenia. Anissa gets Gambi's help. He believes Grace is a shape shifter. We see this is true when Thunder fights an older Asian man (who is actually Grace in disguise).
  • Reverend Holt narrowly survives death by Cutter and returns to the church with a renewed purpose.
  • Jennifer is taking a much more active role as Lightning. After a few misfires, she now has a workable suit and is able to somewhat control her powers. She's out to get Tobias as payback for Khalil's murder.
  • Dr Jace (who was originally working with Lynn on the pod kids) defects to Team Whale.
  • Todd Green wears out his usefulness to Tobias and is killed.
  • Tobias plans to start his own meta human army (so he is going to be in competition with the Markovians). Jace unthaws Joe / Heatstroke, Daryl / Coldsnap, and Rebecca / New Wave. They, along with several other metas, are referred to as the "Masters Of Disaster".
  • Now that Jefferson has two superheros for daughters, he has some rules. 1. Don't go anywhere without backup; 2. Never reveal your secret identity; 3. No killing (not even Whale).
  • Anissa develops another alter ego called "Black Bird".
  • Tobias stokes unrest in the streets by sending in his gangs. He hopes to take out Black Lightning during the riots.
  • Lala/Tattooed Man is again resurrected (this time by Lazarus Prime) to seek revenge for Lady Eve's death. He wipes out Heatstroke. He tries to kill Whale but Tobias has a secret activation word that causes all the tattoos of people he has killed to appear on his body.
  • There's a battle between the meta humans and the Pierces. It looks like LaLa kills Heatwave.
  • Jace is taken back to the Markovians by Instant.
  • Cutter decides Tobias will never be boyfriend material and hits the road.

And in the finale:
  • Tobias is locked in a meta human black ops facility known as "The Pitt". The head guard basically tells him to abandon all hope.
  • We learn that Odell has Wendy, Issac and surprise Khalil in stasis pods.
  • Odell visits the Pierce household and says he (and the ASA) need the help of Black Lightning, Thunder and whoever name Jennifer is calling herself these days. The Markovian War is about to begin and Freeland is ground zero.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Despite the story line in season 2 wondering a bit there is still enough to keep me coming. back. The Pierce family is now a united front with three superheros-- Black Lightning, Thunder and Lightning. There were so many deaths/resurrections its hard to keep tack. I still think Tobias Whale (portrayed by Marvin "Krondon" Jones III) is one of the best villains on TV. And good news, "Black Lightning' has already been renewed for a season 3 so the story will not stop here.
