Ash Vs Evil Dead Season 3 Review: All Hail To The King, Baby

All three seasons of "Ash vs Evil Dead" are currently available on Netflix. The show previously aired on Starz. After saving humanity at the end of season 2, Ash is back in Elk Grove running his dad's hardware store. But instead of just nuts and screws, they also sell sex toys. That should draw a crowd. Ash is now a local hero but we know he cant stay out of trouble long.

Some guy on an Antique Road Show type programs gets hold of the Necronomicon. He of course reads the spell that causes the demons to return. Really BAD idea.

Ash discovers he has a daughter named Brandy. Her mom (Candy last name Barr... too funny) was killed by Deadites via a high school music room cymbal decapitation. Rough way to go. Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana Deorenzo) are all in again. The Ghost Beaters are ready for a battle.

Meanwhile Ruby (ie the Dark One) gets the book and bonds her blood to her-- thus giving birth to a baby..something. The demon baby birth and run in with some hapless tourists was hilarious. Ruby is also doubling as guidance counselor Ms Pruett at Brandy's school.

A new guy (Dalton) shows up. He's with the Knights of Sumeria (KOS). They are an ancient order that is sworn to protect humanity from evil. Ash's dad (Lee Majors) stops by for a while (in ghost form). Great to see him again. Pablo becomes a demon and terrorizes Kelly and Brandy. Demon Pablo is a lot of fun.

"Ash Vs Evil" typically has 1-2 set pieces each season that are over the top gross out fun. Last season, it was Ash at the coroner. This time its Ash at a fertility clinic. Its definitely a slippery situation. And we can always count on over the top blood spewing and guts a plenty.

I'm a bit hazy on the whole Dark Ones mythology but I think Kaya went against the other demons and opened the rift. Ruby eventually kills Kelly and has Kaya inhabit her body. When the other Dark Ones find out Ruby and Kaya have double crossed them, they are none too happy.

Ash and the Knights head back to where it all started. The cabin in the woods. Pedro comments that he never knew it has a basement. This is how they are able to enter the rift and eventually rescue Kelly.

Back on Earth, Ash battles a giant (kaiju sized) Kandarian demon. A tank is involved. Kudos on the cool special effects.

In the end, Ash sacrifices himself to save humanity. It looks like he's killed but one of the KOS put him in some sort of box. He wakes up in the future where a woman calls him "Savior". She shows him the Delta. They jump in and head off to fight the Dark Ones (who apparently are on the "move"). Where are Kelly, Pedro, and Brandy? Are they long dead? The world appears to be toast but have no fear. Ash is still on the job.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). "Ash Vs Evil" continues to be as much fun as ever. Comedy horror is especially hard to pull off. "AvE" has proven they can deliver the goods. Does it not make sense at times? Of course. Is the comedy lowbrow? You betcha. Is our protagonist a chain saw handed, womanizing loser? Yep, yep, and yep. But what makes 'Ash" so fun is it never takes itself too seriously. That means any crazy, over the top thing could happen at any time.

In season 3, Ash learns he has a teenage daughter. He, Kelly and Pedro go up against the more Deadites. Ruby returns (it's always great to see Lucy Lawless). She plans to outsmart the Dark Ones and take over the world. How, you may ask? Why by having a baby that looks just like Ash of course.

Starz canceled "Ash vs Evil" so the season 3 finale also doubles as the series finale. I thought it was an appropriate ending as Ash sacrificed himself to save humanity. I've really enjoyed our time with Ash and his Deadite-fighting besties. All hail to the king, baby!
