Chambers Review: A Slow Burn Mystery That Almost Hits It's Mark

"Chambers" is one of NetFlix's latest original offerings. It tells the story of a teenager who suffers heart failure and receives a transplant from another girl who died the same night.  Sasha Yazzie (Sivan Alyra Rose) eventually meets Becky Lefevre's (Lilliya Reid) parents. They are definitely of means and give Sasha a scholarship to attend Becky's school and her car. This is all a bit uncomfortable but Sasha lives with her uncle and they can barely makes ends meet.

Sasha has to leave her bestie (Yvonne) and boyfriend (TJ) behind as she attends a prestigious white school where everyone gets a laptop and a life coach. The place even have a meditation room for destressing? Seriously, what have these kids got to be stressed about?

Things get even weirder when Sasha begins to take on the characteristics of the deceased teen. What is Becky trying to communicate from the grave? There is a MUCH bigger mystery to her death than is originally thought.

Uma Thurman knocks it out of the park as Nancy--a woman who is grieving for her daughter. It was painful to watch at times. Father Ben (Tony Goldwyn) is also heartbroken but something else is going on with him. Becky's twin Elliot is suffering and turns to drugs and bad behavior as a way to cope. They all belong to some sort of New Age-y group called "The Annex".

One of the more interesting aspects of the show is that it that Sasha is of Dine (Navajo) ancestry. We see way too few Native American characters on television.

One other interesting thing to mention about "Chambers" is it's cinematography. The series focuses on the Southwest desert. There are beautiful shots of dust storms (yes, I know that sounds strange) as well as expansive landscapes. This gives the characters a feeling of isolation.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). Over 10 episodes, "Chambers" follows Sasha as she tries to adjust to her new heart and the parents of the girl who died. We also see a clash of cultures as Sasha is Dine (Navajo) and Becky's parents are wealthy white people.

Sasha continues to investigate what Becky is trying to communicate from beyond the grave. Sasha begins to feel, act and even look like the deceased girl. Some have complained about the pace of the show. Yes, it it is a bit slow. The series could have benefited from fewer episodes-- maybe six or less. But the mystery of what Becky is trying to tell Sasha is slowly revealed. And it's worth the wait in my opinion.
