Dude, You're Screwed Season 1 Review: A Fun Addition To The Survival Genre

There are two seasons of "Dude, You're Screwed" currently available on Amazon Prime. The show originally aired on the Discovery Channel in 2013. I initially wasnt sure based on the title, what "Dude" was about. I'm glad I gave it a closer look.

Five people test their skills in remote locations with no food/water and few resources. They are "kidnapped", blindfolded and dropped in the unknown locale. They are given a few items which may or may not help them. Examples include: a bowling ball, giant pink teddy bear, a speedo, a pool cue, golf clubs, lipstick, antifreeze, a flower bouquet, etc. A few manage to conceal items on their person (such as needles in pants hem for using as a compass, fire starter up the nose, etc). Each contestant must make his way to civilization without 100 hours or lose the game. The participants vital signs are monitored and if they fall over or under a certain core temperature, they are eliminated. Those who complete the challenges get bragging rights (but no monetary reward).

The give guys each do double duty. While one does the challenge, the other four serve as hosts. This contest is definitely not for amateurs. Each person has extensive survival training.

Survival experts include:

  1. Matt Graham- primitive skills specialist, master of atlatl (a tool used to increase the speed of which a spear is thrown). He also cohosted "Dual Survival" on the Discovery channel (replacing Cody Lundin).
  2. John Hudson- called the "professor" by the others, he wrote the SERE manual usd by UK special forces.
  3. Tom "Tomahawk" Moore- previously Army Pathfinder (tracker) and survival instructor. He spends most of his time off the grid between Asia and the US.
  4. Terry Schappert- former Green beret.
  5. Jake Zweig- former Navy seal, current football coach, was also on History's "Top Shot".
  6. Casey Anderson- tracker and conservationist- JOINS IN SEASON 2.
  7. Chris Swanda- backwoods survivalist and preparedness expert. JOINS IN SEASON 2.
  8. Tim Smith- Maine bushcraft master. JOINS IN SEASON 2.

There are seven episodes in season 1. They include the following. Note: This is the order they appeared in on Amazon (and not necessarily the order is which they originally aired).
  1. Green Hell- Matt in the Costa Rican jungle
  2. Conquering Alaska- John on an Alaskan glacier
  3. Embrace The Suck- Terry in an inflatable raft in the Gulf of Mexico
  4. Volcano Nightmare- Jake in the frozen wilderness of Iceland
  5. Dead Man Walking- Tom on a volcano in Chile.
  6. Arctic Disaster- Matt in the Arctic circle
  7. Deadly Inferno- John in Canyonlands Utah.

Is the show 100% authentic? Of course not. They have a camera crew following them around after all. Does that decrease my enjoyment of the series? Nope. They still present a number of helpful survival skills/hacks and that's why I'm tuning in. If you like "Naked & Afraid", "Survivorman" or "Man Vs Wild", check out "Dude, You're Screwed".

Grade: No score is assigned to reality TV shows.
