Homecoming Season 2 Review: Janelle Monae Is Best Thing About This Season

Season 2 of Amazon's "Homecoming" opens with a woman (Janelle Monae) adrift in a canoe. She seems to be suffering from amnesia. A quick trip to the hospital reveals track marks, a tattoo, and a military ID...We're off to the races.

I dont want to give away any spoilers about season 2 so there's not much room to work. How the woman is connected with the Geist Group (from season 1) is eventually revealed. Last time we met Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts, who also serves as executive producer). She worked with veterans with PTSD at the Homecoming Transitional Support Group. Heidi gets in way over her head and uncovered a government conspiracy. This season we're sure something big is afoot but we dont know the specifics.

The story of veteran Walter Cruz (Stephan James) is slightly expanded on in season 2.  We also meet again: Heid's boss Colin Belfast (Bobby Cannavale), and Audrey Temple (Hong Chau).  Chris Cooper and Joan Cusack join the cast. I just love Joan Cusack. She is delightfully bat shit crazy in everything she does.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5).  Over seven episodes we learn what happened to our main character-- a woman with no memory found afloat in a boat. Janelle Monae remains the best thing about 2. She is electric as lead Jackie. More screen time for Janelle please! Visually the series is appealing. The use of split screens, spiral staircases and wide shots of the Geist fields and headquarters are compelling.

If you like psychological thrillers, "Homecoming" is worth a look. Will die hard season 1 fans be happy with the latest offering? I'm not sure. I saw season 1 but wouldnt consider myself a fan. Was season 2 everything I wanted it to be? Not exactly but there is enough to keep me coming back. Try to avoid comparisons with season 1 and consider this it's own story.
