The Sinner Season 3 Review: To Gaze Into The Abyss

"The Sinner" is an anthology series on the USA Network. Bill Pullman (as Detective Harry Ambrose) investigates a different case each season. In season In season 1 the action revolved around Jessica Biel at a beach. In season 2 it's Carrie Coon and a mysterious cult. This time around it's Matt Bomer. He's probably best known for "the Boys In The Band", "Magic Mike", as well as the TV series "White Collar" and American Horror Story"

Jamie Burns (Boner) and his wife Leela (Parisa fitz-Henley) live in upstate Dorchester New York. They are expecting their first child. The couple seem to have it all. He's a beloved high school teacher. She owns her own shop selling essential oils. They love each other. Jamie is an all around good guy. What could possibly disrupt their perfect life?

Enter Jamie's old college pal Nick Haas (Chris Messina). Leela invites him for dinner. Jamie is none too happy to see him. The two men somehow end up in a car accident. Nick is killed. This occurs on/near the property of their neighbor Sonya (Jessica Hecht). Harry (who lives nearrby) is called in to investigate.

Things are not as they appear. None of this is random. It seems the previous best buds were big fans of Aleister Crowley and Frederick Nietzsche. There is talk of the ubermensch (supermna/overman). Pretty heady stuff.

Jamie begins to completely unravel. Harry is not above bending a few rules to find out what's really going on. I won't go into the specifics of the ending-- since uncovering that is part of the fun. Suffice to say, if you're a fan of Mattt Bomer, the show is definitely worth a watch.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). Matt Bomer is excellent in the role of a quickly disintegrating guy who seemed to have it all. Such great range! My only issue with season 3 is it seemed to drag on a bit. We learn the basic "mystery" of the show a few episodes before the finale. Of course it might just be me. I'm not bet patient enough these days to sit through eight episodes. A fourth season of "The Sinner" is on the way so hopefully we'll get some sort of wrap-up for Harry Ambrose before the end of the series..
