Sky Rojo Season 1 Review: A Pulpy Thriller From The Creators Of "Money Heist"

Currently available on NetFlix, "Sky Rojo" is from the creators of "The Money Heist" (Alex Pina and Esther Martinez). It's the most watched non English language on the streaming service. My personal favorite Spanish series is the women in prison drama "Locked Up". See my reviews here

In this new offering, we follow three sex workers from The Club Las Novias. Coral (Veronica Sanchez) is the unofficial leader of the group.There's also Gina (Yany Prado) and Wendy (Lali Esposito). Lali is an Argentine pop star. Yany is Cuban.

The girls go on the run after thinking they killed Romero (Asier Etendia).He is the owner of the high end sex club in Tenerife (Canary Islands Spain). He's basically their pimp. Romero spends tons of money crafting each sex worker into various male fantasies. The women of course provide his income and will never be allowed to leave.

Romero has two henchman-- Moises (Migaul Angel Silvestre) and his brother Christian (Enric Auquer). Silvestre is probably best know to American audiences for his role in "Sense8".

We eventually get some backstory on each person and what lead them (or forced them) to work at the club. This helps the audience decide who to root for (at least at that moment).

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). If you like stylized violence, sex, drugs, and a soap opera-y storyline "Sky Rojo" might be for you. Think Tarantino but in Spanish. The show is told from a female perspective (the three leads are sex workers). It's fast paced with only 8 25 minute episodes. The acting and music are also great. Apparently a second season has been ordered so like the title card says 'The story's just beginning".
