"Curon" Series Review: An Interesting Premise But I Need To Know More

Curon Venosta was a village in northern Italy. It was flooded after WWII to make way for a dam. Some 200 families were forced to relocate. All that is viewable of the original town is the bell tower of a 14th century church sticking up out of the lake. It is said that people sometimes can hear the bells ringing (even though they were removed in the 1950s).

Many of the villagers headed to higher ground nearby. Another interesting aspect of the area is that it was Austrian territory before WWII. After the war, it became part of Italy. This leads to some conflict because some families are Italian and some are German speaking Austrians. Some residents would prefer to again be part of Austria.

This is the backdrop for the Netflix Original "Curon". A single mother (Anna Raina) and her twin teenagers (Daria and Mauro) arrive in Curon.

Anna's estranged father Thomas (who used to run a hotel) is none too happy to see her. The rest of the villagers appear to feel the same way. We've not sure why Anna left or why she's back. In flashbacks we see that years earlier her mother committed suicide under mysterious circumstances.

BEWARE: SPOILERS AHEAD

We eventually learn some of what is going on.. but not enough IMHO. Curon is cursed. When a person in the village starts to feel some sort of emotional conflict (depression, anger, etc) they hear the bell tower ring. Then an evil doppleganger arises from the lake and tries to kill him/her/them in order to take over their life.

There's talk of duality and how each person has both positive and negative attributes. It just depends on which they nourish as to how they turn out. A wolf story is used to illustrate this. I'm sure that the Raina siblings being twins is also supposed to mean something. I thought maybe the mystery had to do with the submerged village. But so far there doent seem to be a connection.

Where exactly do these creatures come from? Is there an alternate universe somewhere? Why does this only occur in Curon? What's up with the multiple copies of the "shadows". How do you kill them for good? And how do we know who is a doppleganger and who isnt? The whole town may be full of evil twins.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). I definitely think "Curon" is worth a watch. The landscape is beautiful. The fact that it's based on a real life location had me hooked. The series is a bit slow at the beginning (but there are only seven episodes total so it's not a big time investment).  Just don't get your hopes up. In the end there are some answers-- but also more questions. Will there be a season 2? I'd be interested to learning what caused all the strangeness in the town of Curon.
