"Re:Mind" was originally distributed by TVTokyo and released on NetFlix in 2017. It focuses on 11 teenagers who are somehow kidnapped the day before their high school graduation. They find themselves all chained (by the feet) around a large table in a room full of strange objects. Over the course of 13 episodes they try to piece together why there are there. A book entitled "Everything Reminds You Of Something" (a Hemingway short story) serves as a clue.
They gradually learn it's because of Miho. She was a fellow classmate and friend who was bullied in some way or another by all the girls. They must confess their misdeeds and apologize for their behavior. The girls disappear one by one. Will anyone be left in the end?
One interesting aspect of "Re:Mind" is that all the actresses are members of the Japanese idol group Hiragana Keyakizaka46 (now known as Hinatazaka46). They perform the theme song. They also all use their real first names in the show:
- Mirei
- Sarina
- Mei
- Ayaka
- Kyoko
- Kumi
- Shiho
- Yuka
- Mao
- Mana
- Memi
- Miho
There isnt a lot online about the series. Reddit seems to be once of the sources of possible solutions to the many mysteries. But I dont want to give away the specifics here.
Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5) An interesting experience overall. I didnt know anything about this Japanese idol group before viewing. Some acting is stronger than others. A lot of time is spent with the girls just yelling at each other. The show could have benefited from fewer more focused episodes. I was absorbed in trying to figure out the mystery of how/why they all ended up in that room. If you like mysteries, "Re:Mind" is worth a watch. Just dont' expect to get all the answers in the end or you'll be very frustrated.
