"Love, Death And Robots" Season 3 Review: Another Great Season With Some Standout Entries

Season 3 of "Love, Death & Robots" dropped on NetFlix back in May. You'll recall from previous seasons that each has a number of animated shorts. All vary in length but are ballpark 10 minutes each. They re in a number of different animation styles. LD&R is meant to give animators freedom to create something other than "family friendly" material. The series is executive produced by. David Fincher, Tim Miller and Jennifer Yuh Nelson.  Each directs one episode-- Fincher ("Bad Traveling"), Miller ("Swarm"), and Nelson ("Kill Team Kill"). The violence this time around is ratcheted up to a 10. There are also two entries that deal with the apocalypse. I'm sure it will continue to be a popular topic given the past three years.

The nine episodes include:

  1. Three Robots: Exit Strategies- Our favorite three robots are back from season 1. This time it's to investigate how humans caused their own extinction.
  2. Bad Traveling- Thanapod (read giant carnivorous crab) vs a ship's crew. One of the best of the series.
  3. The Very Pulse Of The Machine- The only survivor of a crash on a desolate Mars moon tries to get to safety. Rendered in 2D animation.
  4. The Night Of The Mini Dead- LOVED IT !!! My absolute favorite.
  5. Kill Team Kill- Special ops vs a cybernetic grizzly bear killing machine. The only other entry in 2d.
  6. Swarm-
  7. Mason's Rats- Farmer Mason is trying to control his rat problem. The rats are armed and figthting back. Mason has to buy more and more menacing machines as they keep one upping him.
  8. In Vaulted Halls Entombed- Also very enjoyable. Feels like a HP Lovecraft story. I would like to see a longer film about this creature.
  9. Jibaro- Based on a folktale about a deaf knight and a deadly siren. Visually stunning. People typically ask if it's stop motion or live action-- but it's not. One of the best entries in the series. It took animator Alberto Mielgo two years to complete.  He previously won an Emmy for his 2019 "LD&R"entry "Witness".
Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). excellent! Some have commented this is the weakest season in the series but I thought it was really good. Standouts include "Jibaro", "Bad Travels" and "Night of the Mini Dead".
