"Beef" Series Review: Road Rage As Therapy

"Beef" is currently airing on Netflix. This A24 produced show has 10 30ish minute episodes total. The series begins with a road rage incident that spirals in all sorts of unimaginable ways. Amy (played by Ali Wong) is a successful business woman with an artist husband and a young daughter. Daniel (Steven Yeun) is a struggling contractor who is trying to save enough money to bring his parents over from Korea. His younger brother Paul (Young Mazino) and criminal cousin Isaac (David Choe) work with him on occasion. Both Daniel and Amy look like they have it together but are absolutely miserable in their lives. After a minor confrontation, they funnel all their anger and unhappiness into hating each other. While there are moments of levity, "Beef" is really about existential crisis and loneliness.

The show is tearing it up at the awards show. They have won:

  • Golden Globes- 3 wins including: Best Actress and Actor In A Limited Series for Wong and Yeun. It also won Best Limited Series or Anthology or Television Film
  • Emmys- 8 wins including: Outstanding Lead Actress and Actor In A Limited Series for Wong and Yeun, Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie- Lee Sung Jin, Sung Jin also won for Outstanding Writing. The show also won Emmys for Outstanding Casting, Outstanding Contemporary Costumes and Outstanding Picture Editing
  • They are also nominated in the same categories for the Screen Actor Guild awards

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). Loved it! The show is faced paced. The two main leads played by Ali Wong and Steven Yeun are excellent. I'm so happy they're getting the recognition they deserve. Will there be a season 2 of "Beef"? While this is probably the last we'll see of Amy and Daniel, the show was originally pitched as an anthology. I can't wait to see where it goes next.
