NightFall Episode 1-2 Reviews: Sadly, The Knights Templar Are A Bit Of A Snooze

NightFall is the newest original offering from the History channel. The series opens in 1291 with the Knights Templar attempting to defend the Holy Grail and the city of Acre from the Sultan of the Mamluks.  Unfortunately they fail. The city is overrun. The Grail is lost at sea. Next, we see the Knights in Paris. It's 15 years later. One of the brave brothers (Landry du Lauzon) becomes the Master Of The Temple after his boss Godfrey is mysteriously killed. Of course Landy has some big secrets of his own. du Lauzon is having a clandestine affair with King Philip IV's wife Queen Joan. I'm pretty sure that's a no-no. Pope Boniface VIII arrives in Paris. I'm not sure he can be trusted. Also the Grail appears to be in France (but where it is remains a mystery for now).

We all know what eventually happens to the Knights Templar-- and it's not a pretty picture. If you're not aware, check out this article. Unfortunately watching the powers that be get to the final showdown isnt that interesting.

Landry (Tom Cullen of "Downtown Abbey fame") is easy on the eyes and does an adequate job. I also enjoyed Jim Carter (another "Downton" alum, they're everywhere!) as Boniface. He chews up the scenery and everything around him. Unfortunately both actors are spinning their wheels without a more compelling story.

Grade: 2 Monsters (out of 5). I'm sure the History channel hoped to remake the success of "Vikings". Unfortunately "NightFall" isn't it. Why not focus the story on the financial power the Knights yielded and how various nobility conspire against them? That would be more interesting than hunting for the Grail.  Also, why does everyone in 13th Century France have British accents? I will acknowledge to loving all things British... but come on people!

After watching two (of of ten episodes total), I think I'll stick with my favorite Norsemen instead. The characters on "Vikings" are more interesting and the sword fighting more epic. And if ya want to learn about the fate of the "supposed" Holy Grail, save yourself some time and check out Dan Brown's books and movies instead.
