Top 10 Horror Movies Of 2023

It's time again for my top 10 horror movie picks of the year. 2023 was considered the year of the possession movie. There were at least six such filma released last year-- Exorcist: Believer, Evil Lurks Here, Evil Dead Rise, Attachment, The Pope's Exorcist, Nefarious, etc. I don't even like possession movies that much and my top 3 are all possession movies. Let me know your favorites in the comments below.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Totally Killer- "Back To The Future" with a horror slant. This movie was a lot of fun and starred Kiernan Shipka of "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina". The main character travels back in time to combat the Sweet 16 Killer. Tons of fun 80's references.
  • Cocaine Bear- Yes it's stupid and a one trick pony but I dont care, It was lots of fun and had a # of my favorite actors from the TV series "The Americans" including  Kerri Russell and her hubby Matthew Rhys as well as Margo Martindale.
  • Suitable Flesh- In the spirit of Reanimator,This movie is based on a Lovecraft short story. Starring Barbara Crampton and Heather Graham (who may have a pact with the devil since she never seems to age).
  • Satanic Hispanics- Anthology- 4 stories and a really good wrap around story (with a super cool demon). Tone transitions are a bit off but I really enjoyed all the stories (especially the two humorous segments)
  • Renfield- This show hasnt gotten much love but I really enjoyed it. I like how the Renfield/Dracula relationship is depicted as a codependent one. Nicholas Cage is  (as always) over the top as Dracula. i do wish the ending had been rewritten. Other than that, it was great.
And now to my top 10 list:

  • 10 El Conde (The Count)- I didnt like at first but watched a second time and it grew on me. In black and white, it's supposed to be the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet as a 250 year old vampire but I dont know anything about Chilean politics. Hes an old vamp that has lost his will to live. He's joined in ian solated farmhouse by his wife and butler. His grown kids visit. A nun is sent by the Vatican. Some of the visuals are very striking such as the vamps flying over a city with capes blowing in the wind.
  • 9 Cobweb- About a little boy who hears something in the walls. Starring Lizzy Caplan and from "The Boys" Anthony Starr.  Lots of creepy atmosphere. I just wanted to see more of the crazy parents
  • 8 Infinity Pool- From Brandon Cronenberg. Starring Alexander Skarsgaard and Mia Goth from X/Pearl. A couple goes on a vaca to a fictious country and eventually all hell  breaks lose. Interesting idea.
  • 7 The Offering- This one hasnt gotten a lot of buzz but I really enjoyed. It's based on Jewish folklore. I'm always interested to learn about things that I didnt know existed. The basic premise is a guy and his pregnant wife go to see his Hassidic father who owns a funeral home.
  • 6 Birth/Rebirth- Shudder- A retelling of the Frankestein story. How far will a mother will go for her child? Excellent acting by the two leads Marin Ireland and Judy Reyes. The movie is basically a two person show.
  • 5 M3gan- Who doesnt know about this killer doll? She has her own dance craze. I thought the movie was a lot of fun. The action started very quickly (which I appreciate since I have a short attention span). A sequel is planned.
  • 4 No One Will Save You- Practically no dialogue throughout the movie, The aliens are great. Kudos to actress Kaitlyn Dever THE MOVIE IS A ONE PERSON SHOW. The ending may be a bit confusing. You may need to check online for an explanation.
  • 3 Evil Dead Rise- It has everything you expect from an evil dead movie-- tons of gore and scary deadites. This time the action moves from an isolated cabin to an isolated apartment building. Alyssa Sutherland is great as the mother. The practical effects were great. No need to have watched the rest of the franchise but there a bunch of fun easter eggs if you do. Also Bruce Campbell (Ash) is the voice on the record that play when they find the hidden Necronomicon.
  • Talk To Me- Possession as a teenage party trick. So these kids ends up with a dismembered hand. You have to shake it and say "talk to me". A spirit will then inhabit you for whatever period of time. I can somehow see stupid kids of today doing this at a party so they can take videos. They arent fazed by how dangerous it is till it's too late. Great acting by all the young leads.
  • 1 When Evil Lurks- Possession movies typically arent my favorites but this universe has a very different take on them. They know about possession and the rules you're supposed to follow to handle them properly. Too bad the main characters didnt listen. There are a # of shocking scenes here. That's why it's my #1 of the year.
