Squid Game Season 3 Review: A Fitting Ending For Player 456

NOTE: Spoilers ahead. Do not proceed if you haven't watched season 3 of "Squid Game"

For some reason (I assume it's a financial one), the last "game" is split between two seasons. This caused viewer satisfaction to drop since not a lot happened in season 2.

Going into season 3, the survivors are:

  • Player 456- Gi-hun played by Lee Jung- jae
  • Mother and son Geum-ja and Yong-sik
  • Player 333- cryto criminal Myung-gi
  • Player 222- Myung-gi's pregnant ex girlfriend Jun-hee (played by Jo Uri)
  • Hyung-ju- who hopes to pay for gender assignment surgery with their winnings
  • Wi Ha-joon
The Front Man/Young-il (played Lee Byung-hun) inserted himself into the game earlier in the season. His brother Jun-ho (played by Wi Ha-joon) continues to search for the mysterious island where the game is played.

The last game is called Sky Squid. The players are on towers and must cross over and eliminate one person on each tower. Only one person can survive in the end. The final players left are Player 456, Myung-gi (played by Yim Si-wan) who is the baby's father and the baby-- Jun-hee. Myung-gi wants to kill his own child. He's a VERY bad parent. Gi-hun manages to protect the baby. He then sacrifices himself so the baby can live. There was no other way out (other than killing the baby). What a terrible choice.

Fast forward to six months later. We catch up with Guard No-eul. She has previously secretly helped Gyeong-seok escape the island. She visits him at the amusement par. He’s alive and well — as is his young daughter, Na-yeon. He doesnt recognize her. No-eul then heads to China looking for her own daughter.

After the game, we check up on some people in the "outside" world. The Front Man survived the island's explosion and took the baby with him. He breaks into his brothers apartment and leaves the baby and the prize money won by the baby (Player 222).

He also steals Gi-hun's money from the Pink Hotel. Is he keeping it for himself? Nope. He travels to LA and gives it to Gi-hun’s daughter Ga-yeong (played by Jo Ah-in). He informs the girl that her estranged father is dead.

When driving away, he sees two people playing ddakji. One of them is Cate Blanchett. SURPRISE! Looks like there will be US Squid Game next. I believe its supposed to take place in Las Vegas. Count me in!

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). I liked season 3 much more than season 2. It had a riveting ending and an appropriate sendoff for Player 456. "Squid Game" continues to be an international hit and is the most watched show of all time on NetFlix. Cant wait to see what they do with the US version.
