12 Monkeys Episode 12 Review: Never Bring A Fake Gun To A Knife Fight

I wanted to make sure and get last week's review up before tomorrow's finale. "12 Monkeys" continues to be one of the best new shows on TV and "Paradox" was no exception.

Most of the action takes place in 2015 with a few flash forwards to Jones in 2043. Olivia and Jennifer make appearances. We briefly see Little Ramses but adult Ramse is MIA. Maybe it's because episode 11 was mainly about him.

In 2015 we see a younger Katarina talking with her father. He wants her to be a doctor. She says she's not good with people. Cassie approaches Katarina outside saying she must help Cole. Jones blows her off but Cassie pulls a gun. She shows Katarina pictures of her work (from the future). Cassie is not a very good kidnapper but Jones is intrigued.

What A Weasel

Cole awakens to find Aaron hovering over him. Cole starts foaming at the mouth. I was worried that Aaron might kill Cole. I dont trust Aaron one little bit. Instead he calls Cassie who tells him inject Cole with something. Cole is stable (for now).  Later Aaron feels ignored since Cole is back. He calls someone on the phone. Yep it's Olivia. He will give the Monkeys Cole's location in exchange for Cassie's safety. At Cassie's secret lair, Jones pulls a knife. Cassie waves her gun around again. Katarina knows it's fake. Too funny.

Now That's How To Do A Hostile Takeover

Elsewhere the Markridge Group is having a board meeting. Jennifer arrives and walks across the board room table. Now Jennifer is in charge. Great scene! We need to see much more of Jennifer. And did you notice her dress had guns on it? I love that crazy girl!

Little Cole

Cole is dying from too much splintering. Off Cassie and Jones go to find Matthew Cole (James' daddy). We learn Jones is pregnant (that should slow down her smoking... a little). Matthew refuses to help them. As Cassie and Katrina leave, they see a boy on a swing. It is James (AKA Little Cole). Cassie convinces Cole's father to meet the version. He says Cole's mother knew about the Army of 12 Monkeys. Who is she?

The father/son reunion was a touching one. Cole also sees himself as a boy but cant get close because of the paradox. He will use little Cole's blood to try to counteract the affects of splintering. The only problem is he wont be able to travel anymore. Well, that cant be good.

I Wasnt Expecting That

Aaron tries to kidnap Cassie. She punches him in the nose. Hit him a few more times. The Pallid Man arrives. Cassie grabs Little James. Matthew stays behind to give them time to escape. He is killed. Pallid Man approaches Cole. It looks like the jig is up but Cole injects himself with Little Cole's blood. This creates a nuclear reaction. Great special effects! I really liked the rays of light shooting through Cole (and the levitating).

Everyone Says Their Goodbyes...For Now

Cassie returns to find the house destroyed. I'm not sure insurance will pay for that. But Big Cole is good as new. Jones says her goodbyes. She's off to have a baby. And now we know why she was so certain Cole was the "one" when she met him for the "first time" in 2043. We also learn what some of Cole's visions were about in this episode. Remember the recurring vision of a glass shattering. That was when he was a boy and was drinking milk at Cassie's and saw his father killed.

Later Big Cole and Cassie see Little Cole. He's been put into foster care. On the playground Little Ramse befriends him. Thus begins a beautiful/horrific friendship.

Who Are These Strange Creatures?

Meanwhile in 2043 lots of red leaves are showing up in the teleportation device. Uh oh. And here come some silver faced dudes along with Deacon. They are going to attack the base. Who are these people? They look like the ninja vampires from "The Strain". Now that would be a great crossover-- "12 Monkeys" and "The Strain". The possibilities are endless.

Favorite Quotes:
  • "Im not good with people."- Jones to her father. Great line!
  • Cole: "You shouldnt have brought her here." Cassie: "Jones is here because she's always come here. Its fate."
  • "Maybe your always and my always are not the same"- Past Jones to Cole
  • "An embarrassing takeover"- Jen at the board meeting.
  • "Raise your hand if you want to be the new him"- Jennifer about the just fired CEO.
  • "The only failure is in giving up."- Cole's Daddy.
  • "I want to make a deal"- Aaron to the Monkeys.

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). Another excellent episode. I especially enjoyed Barbara Sukowa as young Jones. This show just keeps getting better and better. I cant wait for the finale.
