Secrets & Lies Episodes 5 Thru 6 Reviews: Neighborhood Full Of Suspects

Surprise! In case you havent figured it out yet, each week "Secrets & Lies" suggests a different neighbor as Tom's killer and then rules them out by the end of the hour. We know from previous episodes that it's not: Ben, baby mama Jess, her husband Scott, her sister and Scott's love interest Nicole, or the Richardsons (the nice British husband/brother wife/sister). The jury is still out on live in moocher Dave and the rest of the Crawford family.

"The Jacket" throws up another red herring (or actually three) with Ben's autistic neighbor Matty, his criminal brother Tyler and their long suffering mother Lisa (Melissa Gilbert). Ben follows Matt into the woods because he's clutching a blood covered jacket. We think for about two seconds he might be the killer. But nope, Matty is seriously freaked out by rain and it was raining heavily the day Tom was killed. But how about Lisa? I still havent given her up as a suspect-- even though she hardly has time with an autistic son. And Half Pint from "Little House on the Prairie" as the actual killer would be great fun.

Scary Flashlights...Not

Ben awakes to a garage full of flashlights and fake blood in the driveway. All I could think of is someone spent a lot of money buying flashlights. I hope they got them at Sam's Club where they could guy in bulk.

In other happenings, Christy's car has "guilty" scratched into it. The person responsible turns out the be Natalie's boyfriend Cooper. He's just upset because the Crawfords wont let him see Natalie.

Wouldnt It Be Funny If Kevin Was Really An Accountant For The Government And Not A Highly Trained Torturer?

"The Confession" gives Ben a little breathing room when all the reporters move on to next big story. It's obvious to Cornell that someone is trying to frame Ben. She asks if he wants police protection but he declines. This week's suspect is... wait for it... its someone with military experience... it's neighbor Kevin. He used to nefarious things for the State Department. Kevin kidnaps Ben and tortures him-- first with a hose, then by hitting him with a ball in a sock, then by waterboarding. He's certain Ben is a murderer. He makes Ben did his own grave. Finally Ben escapes and calls 911 but there's no signal. Finally he gets a weak one and yells for help. Kevin stops him. Cornell and the police show up in the nick of time.

Any Excuse To Show Ben Shirtless Is A Good One

We learn that Kevin is obsessed with Ben's infidelity because his own wife cheated on him while he was in Kuwait. Sorry but this doesnt seem like a very sensible reason. In a flashback we also see that Christy had an abortion (without consulting Ben) right around the time Tom was killed. No it's not an excuse but it helps explain how Ben ended up with Jess.

Looks Like Arthur Heads To The Police Station Next Week

Later Arthur Fention gets Ben to his house by sending him an email with a news story about Christy, Natalie and Abby. Ben goes ballistic and runs over to his house. Arthur opens the door and gets punched in the face. But it turns out that Arthur is really after Cornell and wants Ben's help. OK but it would have saved a lot of time if you had just asked. What has Cornell done that Arthur is investigating her?

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). There are 10 episodes total so 4 to go till we find out who killed Tom. Please place your bets below. My money is still on the Crawford's youngest daughter Abby (since she looks LEAST likely to be the killer).
