Movie Review: Atomic Blonde: Charlize Theron Gives The Spy Genre A Major Ass Whoopin'

"Atomic Blonde" hit theaters this weekend. Based on a 2012 graphic novel "The Coldest City", the movie stars Charlize Theron. James McAvoy, Sophia Boutella and John Goodman round out a stellar cast. If you dont recognize Sophia, she most recently starred alongside Tom Cruise in "The Mummy" and also appeared as Gazelle in "Kingsman: The Secret Service". "AB" is directed by David Leitch (who previously worked on "John Wick"). He is also slated to direct the upcoming "Deadpool 2". Lietch's past as a stuntman undoubtedly helped shape the movie's vision. The highly choreographed fight scenes are to die for (quite literally).

"Blonde's" story is your basic spy fare. The world is in the midst of the Cold War as MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton is sent to 1989s Berlin. Her mission is to recover a list of operatives (before the Russians get to it). The information is hidden inside a wristwatch. Included is the identity of a mysterious double agent known as "Satchel". Meanwhile the Berlin Wall is about to come down and there's all sorts of turmoil in the streets. I won't the rest away because it would diminish your viewing pleasure. Suffice to say, things are not as they appear.

Two things kick "Atomic Blonde" into overdrive: 1. The musical score is comprised entirely of 1980s tunes. This greatly adds to the show's fun. 2. While Charlize is always a compelling on screen presence, we've never seen her in a performance like this. Lorraine takes a major beating on several occasions (and dishes out even more). I was SERIOUSLY impressed to learn that Theron does much of the fighting herself. Word of advice friends, dont make Charlize mad.

Will there be an "Atomic Blonde 2"? If so, I'll all in. Some have suggested Charlize as the next James Bond. That's an even better idea. Theron has proven she can do anything Bond does but in stiletto heels. No small feat.

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). Excellent! The fight scenes, the music and Theron's magnetic presence combine to make "Atomic Blonde" a must see action flick. I especially enjoyed her scenes with Boutella's French agent Delphine Lasalle. Those ladies are smokin' hot individually and explosive together.

I only have two complaints about the movie: 1. The plot is kinda bland; and 2: The flashback structure assures the audience that Broughton will live to fight another day. But we already know Charlize isn't going to die. She's the star for Christ's sake. Neither of these negatives are deal breakers. "Atomic Blonde" completely delivered. It's ultra violent, ultra sexy, and ultra fun to watch.
