There are TONS of horror franchises out there. In order to make this list, the franchise must have at least four films total so "Insidious", "The Grudge", "Hostel", "Blade", etc are not included. The totals below are US box office numbers unless otherwise noted.  


  • Alien- 6 films-  $590.19 million- "Alien" is the highest grossing horror franchise in history- Total worldwide gross is $1.5 billion unadjusted for inflation.
  • Amityville Horror- 4 films- $170.5 million
  • Child's Play- 5 films- $126.1 million
  • Children Of The Corn-9 films with a new film expected in 2018- $14.57 million for the first film
  • The Conjuring- 4 films- $425.41 million"The Conjuring" is the second highest grossing horror franchise. "The Conjuring" was released in 2013, "Annabelle" 2014, "The Conjuring II" in 2016 and "Annabelle: Creation" in 2017. Two more spinoffs are currently in the words. 
  • Evil Dead- 4 films and a TV series- $74.1 million
  • The Exorcist- 6 films (and a TV series entitled "Exorcist")-  $331.59 million in the US, $1.145 billion worldwide- In the top ten list. 
  • Final Destination- 5 films- $263.46 million
  • Friday The 13th- 12 films- $380.64 million- In the top five list. 
  • Halloween- 10 films- $308.52 million
  • HellRaiser- 9 films- $48.5 million
  • The Hills Have Eyes- 4 films- $62 million for the first two films
  • Jaws-  4 films- $408.05 million- the original summer blockbuster movie- In the top five list. 
  • Living Dead- 6 Romero films plus spinoffs- $44.74 million
  • Nightmare On Elm Street- 9 films- $370.5 million
  • The Omen- 4 films- $162.5 million
  • Paranormal Activity- 6 films- $401.36 million- In the top five list. 
  • Phantasm- 5 films- $7.2 million for the second film
  • Poltergeist- 4 films- $179.7 million
  • Psycho- 4 films (and a TV series entitled "Bates Motel")- $102.7 million
  • Pumpkinhead- 4 films- 44.3 million for the first film
  • Resident Evil- 6 films- $271.27 million- In the top 10 list- "Resident Evil: Final Chapter" was released in 2016- A series reboot is now in the works- This is the highest grossing franchise based on a video game. 
  • Saw- 7 films-  $415.91 million- "Jigsaw" (also know as "Saw VIII" was released on October 17, 2017. "Saw" is the third highest grossing horror franchise. 
  • Scream- 4 films and a TV series- $331.73 million
  • Silence Of The Lambs-5 films and a TV series entitled "Hannibal"- $688.9 million worldwide- In the top five on some lists.  One of only three movies to win top five Oscars--  Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay. 
  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre- 8 films- $199.3 million
  • Underworld- 5 films- $252.77 million- "Underworld: Blood Wars" was released in 2016- A sixth movie and TV series may be in development- in the top 10 list
  • Wrong Turn- 6 films- $28.7 million
