Ash Vs Evil Dead Season 2 Review: Ash Accidentally Saves Humanity... Or Does He?

I wasnt sure it was possible but "Ash Vs Evil Dead" gets even crazier in season 2. Ash, Pedro and Kelly are rudely interrupted in Jacksonville by some demons. Lucy has lost control of her demon children and needs Ash and crew's help. Something about her evil hubby Baal. He likes to wear other people's skin. Freaky stuff.

Ash loses the Necronomicon (Book Of The Dead). It's in the morgue INSIDE someone's body. Oh dear. What results is the craziest scene of the season. Ash has to open each cadaver to check. One guys intestines attack him and literally pull Ash into his body through his butt. Yes, you read that right. This leads to an INSANE fight with Ash stuck up the deceased's bum. Ash exclaims "There's only one asshole in this town and it's me".

Ash heads back to his home town of Elk Grove, Michigan. We meet his father (who is of course Lee Majors). He's as big a jerk and womanizer as Ash. Those two have some family issues. Ash accidentally kills his high school bestie Chet (Ted Raimi). Cheryl (Ash's sister) appears and they battle through the house and into the front yard. Yes, that really is Ellen Sandweiss who was the original Cheryl in "The Evil Dead" movie. The townsfolk are gathered outside and think Ash is a serial killer.

Ash's car becomes possessed and kills a few people including his Pops. Pedro (after having the Necro stuck on his face last season) now has the gift of precognition (which scares the bejesus out of him). Kelly teams up with Lucy in fighting her evil kiddies. We meet Baal. Yes that skin wearing is a good trick (but he's still not as menacing as I would like). We meet someone epic to fight Ash.

In a SUPER FUN episode, Ash is committed to a mental asylum. Baal is a psychiatrist and tries to convince Ash he's crazy. Yep, there's a rude Ash puppet. He steals all the scenes. More PUPPET next year please. Luckily the others arrive to break Ash out. Pablo conducts a ritual to get rid of Baal once and for all. At first it looks like it works. Uh nope. Pablo ends up severed in half. Into the trunk he goes.

Ash, Kelly and Ruby travel back to 1982 to nab the book BEFORE all bad the stuff happens. This will save Pablo and everyone else's lives. We meet (for the first time in the TV series) Professor Knowby and his wife. Excellent disgusting scene in the basement with Henrietta Knowby. Hilarious! And did you know Henrietta is Ted Raimi in latex?

The time travel logic here seems a bit flawed to my little brain. If Ash goes back in time and stops his younger self from touching the Necro. then all of this wouldnt have happened in the first place. And Ash wouldnt have gone back in time to save the day. But we'll just let it all slide.

The original Ruby appears. We're call her BlackRuby (cause her hair is black and the other Ruby's is pink). BlackRuby doesnt like the decisions PinkRuby has made. She still wants to live happily ever after with her Baby Daddy Baal and their spooky children. So she stabs PinkRuby dead. Oh dear. BlackRuby ain't playing.

Next Ash and Baal agree have a good old fashioned fist fight. If Baal wins, Hell will come to Earth. Kelly will be eaten (and defiled) by the demon children. If Ash wins, everything will go back to the way it was before.  in the meantime, BlackRuby tries to get Kelly to join her in ruling the underworld. Kelly doesnt bite. After a great fight Ash wins. Baal goes back to Hell.

In the final scene the residents of Elk Grove (who previously thought Ash was a serial killer) throw him a parade. Ash and Linda share a kiss. Kelly and a now whole Pedro are there. In the background we see the ghosts of Daddy Williams, Cheryl and his Chet. Ruby also appears.

So what does it all mean? My theory is none of the parade scene actually happened. Remember BlackRuby was trying to do something with the book in the event Baal lost. Maybe it's all a vision to keep Ash busy so she can continue with her plans of world domination.

Highlights:
  • Ash vs Intestines- the morgue battle
  • Lee Major "The Six Million Dollar Man" as Ash's father Brock Campbell
  • Ash in the mental hospital is my favorite episode
  • The trash talking Ash puppet is a hoot
  • What's up with Kelly? Ruby keeps telling her she is stronger than Ash. It seemed like Kelly is on the verge of something big but that never happens. Interestingly, an alternate ending was written for this story but never aired. In it Kelly is determined to be Ash's daughter... Interesting. See the video here.
  • Evil rapey trees
  • Ash vs Henrietta is hilarious
  • LOTS and LOTS of blood and other bodily fluids

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). IMHO season 2 is an improvement over the freshman season. The story is more developed and the characters more refined. No only is there still plenty of severed heads and intestines but several scenes are WAY over the top. These include the morgue scene and Henrietta in the cabin. Season 3 of "Ash Vs Evil Dead" is back on Starz on February 25.
