- The Haunting Of Hill House- 2018- I can't say enough good things about this NetFlix series. I started watching expecting a horror movie and instead got a moving family drama. Everything about "Hill House" is perfect-- the acting, the writing and the cinematography. In fact, it's one of my favorite shows of the year. I love it so much I wish there was more. See my reviews here
- Hush- 2016- Another NetFlix original, this movie follows a deaf writer (Kate Siegel, who also happens to be Flanagan's wife) as she spends time alone in an isolated cabin. Most of the movie focuses on just two characters-- Maddie and her psycho attacker. "Hush" is surprisingly suspenseful and fast moving.
- Gerald's Game- 2017- This Stephen King adaptation is a NetFlix exclusive. It focuses primarily on one character throughout the movie. While I have an issue with the final act (I wont give it away, you'll know it when you see it), the rest is still wonderful... and cringe inducing.
- Oculus- 2013- "Oculus" is available on Amazon Prime. It involves a brother (Tim), sister (Kaylie) and a seriously evil mirror. The antique mirror has killed a bunch of people throughout it's existence. And it's not done with what's left of the Russell family.
- Ouija: Origin Of Evil- 2016- This is a hard movie to find. It's not on Amazon, NetFlix or Hulu. I ended up watching it on iTunes for $15. It is actually a prequel to "Oujia" (which I confess to not seeing). I enjoyed "Origin" as a standalone movie. Enough time was given to the characters so we rooted for them when the scaries came a knockin'. Sure the story is a bit sketchy near the end but who cares. Extra bonus points for great child actors and freaky demon possession.
- Before I Wake- 2016- Available on NetFlix, this is another story about family. A couple grieving over the death of their young child fosters another little boy. Things are not what they seem. The child has a very special gift that can be used for either good or evil.
- Absentia- 2011- This is Flanagan's earliest work and is available on Amazon Prime. Much of the budget of this independent film was raised via Kickstarter. A pregnant woman's husband disappeared several yeas ago. Her sister Callie arrives to help out. She has her own demons. Tricia is trying to declare Daniel dead by absentia (hence the title). Then all sorts of strangeness begins. "Absentia" is a good example of how to make an effective independent film.
