Wolf Creek Season 1 Review: A Great Big Bad But Needs A Better Ending

The six episodes of "Wolf Creek" season 1 are currently available on Shudder. Its based on the two "Wolf Creek" movies. I must admit to not seeing either so I went into the series blind. The TV show was released in 2016. There is apparently a second season already out as well.

An American family (the Thorogoods) head to Australian for a vacation. They looking forward to some R&R and for the final girl Eve (played by Lucy Fry) to try to overcome her addiction problems. They soon encounter who they think is a friendly local man-- Mick Taylor (played excellently by John Jarratt). It all goes down hill from there.

The landscape in the series is a character unto itself. Its beautiful and brutal at the same time. I'm not sure how anyone could survive there.

Despite all the positives going for it, I have an issue with the finale. After a great buildup the final confrontation is a bit of a let down (and the mid credits scene is preposterous). I guess they're trying to make Mick into the next Michael Myers? I'm fine with that but please give us an ending that's worthy of such a great baddie.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). The intro music is haunting. The cinematography of the Outback is beautiful. The series has a good "final girl" and a compelling killer. The finale is a bit of a let down though. With just six episodes "Wolf Creek" is a fast watch. You may be afraid to travel to Australia after viewing this series.
