Killjoys Season 5 Review (Series Finale): A Perfect Sendoff For My Favorite Space Bounty Hunters

When we last left "Killjoys", The Lady had escaped the Green along with Dutch. Aneela (Dutch's sister/mother... something) was still trapped inside. We thought that Aneela and the Hullen were the bad guy. It turns out The Lady is the real "big bad". All we know about her is: 1. She is the last of her race; 2. She is very old; 3. She wants to take over the universe (and enslave everyone in it); 4. She likes to inhabit different bodies while keeping hers hidden.

Dutch and Johnny are a happily married couple on Westerly. D'avin shows up (not knowing he is Johnny's brother). He is a RAC agent and has a warrant out for Jaq Kin Ritt (who is of course his own son). D'avin and Aneela are Jaq's parents and Delle Seyah Kendry (Aneela's girlfriend) carried the child. Don't ask... it's complicated.

When the final season begins, we learn that everyone's memories have been wiped. That includes Yala (Dutch), Johnny, D'Avin, Zeph, Pree, Gared, Turin and Fancy.  Zeph finally figures out that the showers are what is keeping everyone unaware of their true identities. Meanwhile The Lady (in the body of a girl) is terraforming the planet for her hatchlings.

The Killjoys are taken to a maximum security prison (where they are for several episodes). I thought it was a bit long but we get to see Dutch in some great fight scenes. We also eventually get a bunch of new people to help to save the world.

Episode 10 "The Last Dance" starts with a voiceover by Khlyen (the man that raised Dutch and turned her into an assassin). It's a bit long but I wanted to include here because it so aptly depicts the journey we've been on.

"Every story starts with a lie. That’s the job of the beginnings, to tell you you’re safe, that all of this lasts, and nothing will change. But underneath there are signs of your true story — who made you, who harmed you, what the hells you were born to fight. And you won’t want to hear it yet, so you’ll run, live, collect the things that matter along the way — an oath, your team, a home. Only then will you see the real enemy: her, last of a dying race come to destroy ours. She has her ships and her slaves, but you have them, this strange, messy, impossible family full of enemies and siblings, lovers, and hope. It doesn’t matter how your story begins. It’s about who is with you at the end."

Jaq (short for Jaqobis) arrives on the ship to help his father stay alive. Remember he has both enhanced and psychic powers (given his parents). Aleena had previously hidden him in the mirrored cube so he would be safe. Jaq ends up taking a bullet but have no fear. It's going to take a lot more than that to keep him down.

We finally get down to the battle with The Lady (but to be honest it's a bit anticlimatic). I thought it would be a major battle with several people sacrificing themselves. Instead it was a battle between Dutch and Khlyen (who are both under The Ladys control). But that at least gave the others time to destroy The Lady's spidery body. Dutch surprisingly does NOT kill The Lady (when given the chance). Instead leaving her in the girl's body, trapping her in the cube and sending her a doll. I assume the idea is, the longer she stays in a human body, the more she become human. But she's sent tons of her babies around the Quad. I personally think you should get rid of her but not one asked me.

Zeph finds Pip (who is somehow still alive) This seems unlikely but I'm happy they got a good ending. Pree and Jared are together. Delle Seyah makes Pree Lord Governor or Westerly. That way he can help all the refugees who now have no homes thanks to Old Town being bombed into oblivion. Pree and Gare Bear end up together (as well they should).

What happens to Khlyen is a bit fuzzy but I think he goes back to wherever Dutch's mom was hiding. Dutch is finally able to move on with her life as well. Khlyen no longer has any control over her.

The final act of Team Awesome Force is to have one last battle (with The Lady's babies). Then Johnny will take Lucy and head out to start a new life. He has agreed that if he doesnt find what he's looking for, he'll come back in one year to the day. D'avin and Dutch have declared their love for each other so hopefully the two kids will make it.

And my other favorite couple (the Green Queens --Delle Seyah and Aneela) have also declared their feelings for each other. Aneela says if Delle wants to remain human, she will stand by her until her death.

Aneela: You do not owe me this. If you want to stay human, I will hold your hands when you turn gray. I will bury you with honor and burn worlds in your name, and you will not be forgotten.
Delle Seyah: Or?
Aneela: The war is over, and we have a son and an empire, and I need my queen.

The finale scene has the two of them hooked up together so Aneela can make Delle Seyah Hullen again. They and Jaq should have their own spinoff. I would sooo watch it.

Grade: 4 3/4 Monsters (out of 5). After five seasons, SyFy's "Killjoys" has come to a close. I must say, I've really enjoyed the ride. The show was such a surprise hit due to its compelling mythology, excellent acting and it just looks like everyone is having so much fun. The relationships between people are messy and complicated. But somehow they all end up (sometimes begrudingly) loving each other. "Killjoys" has a number of strong female leads (which is sadly in short supply in many scifi series). It also has a number of queer roles (even more unusual in scifi shows). The great thing about all of these characters is that their gender/sexual identity/sexual orientation is not the main focus. Instead it's who they are as people. Are they loyal? Are they trustworthy? Are they willing to sacrifice it all to save humanity from an ancient evil entity?

The finale was almost perfect IMHO. It ties up all the loose ends with each character's arc. Sadly, I'd like to see more but all good things must come to an end. Hannah- John Kamen has a busy schedule with movie and TV roles (including NetFlix's"The Stranger"). And Aaron Ashmore (Johnny) is currently playing Uncle Duncan on another fun NetFlix show "Locke & Key". Luke Macfarlane has a movie on Hallmark and I'm not sure what all else.

I second Dutch's closing comment. "I'm going to miss this (too)". Think there's a chance we could ever get a standalone via (ala "Firefly")?
