I LOVE, LOVE the "Purge" movies. The TV series has been somewhat of a mixed bag though. See my previous reviews here Season 2 is currently available on Hulu (10 episodes total). It originally aired on the USA Network. This season takes place in New Orleans sometime between 2031 and 2040 (which is 14 years after the first Purge). I had always wondered what happens during the other 364 days...and now we know.
We follow four main characters. At some point some of their life's intersect. But I'll spare ya the spoilers.
- Esme (Paolo Nunez)- works in surveilance for the NFFA (National Founding Fathers Of America). She witnesses the death of her former teacher Drew Adams on Purge night and investigates what happened.
- Ryan (Max Martini)- One of several cops who attempt to rob a bank on Purge night.
- Marcus( Derek Luke)- A doctor who is almost killed on Purge night. He initially has no idea who would want to off him. He's also not sure who to trust-- including his wife Michelle.
- Ben (Joel Allen)- Ben and a frat brother Turner are out Purge night on a dare to take a photo of Suicide Bridge. Ben is almost raped and killed. The event has a very serios lasting effect on him.
Make sure you catch the cold open to several of the episodes. They'e great.
- Episode 1's intro is voice over actress Megan (played by Cindy Robinson) reading the Purge Emergency Broadcast System message. Megan is excellent. Loved it!
- Episode 2's intro has Zippy Maids doing cleanup and body removal at a house. It's one of a number of industries that have grown up to support the Purge.
- Episode 4's intro has a UPS type guy scanning boxes and delivering the cremated remains to their love ones. It all seems very up and up until we see how the "grief boxes" are put together. There are no individual remains. It's just barrels full of ashes. A scoopfull of each is added to the box.
- Also dont miss the Ethan Hawke cameo in the finale. He is home surveillance system sales person James Sandin. We met him in the very first movie.
Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Season 2 of "The Purge" gave me what i was looking for. That is "what happens during the other 365 days of the year"? This season focuses on four main characters. We see what impact this dystopian society has on regular people. The beginning of the season was a bit slow but definitely picked up towards the end.
The TV series has been officially canceled by the USA Network but have no fear. The last Purge movie named "The Forever Purge" was scheduled for release in 2020. The 'Rona has forced it to move to July 2021. Probably a good idea anyway. Watching "The Purge" is definitely not as entertaining when you're in the middle of something worse. .
