"Post Mortem: No One Dies In Skarnes" Review: A Quirky Norwegian Series About A Recently Undead Woman And Her Family's Funeral Business

"Post Mortem" (currently available on NetFlix) is an interesting Norwegian offering. There are only six episodes (of around 45 minutes each). I would consider the series a Nordic noir with some dark comedy elements. Some have compared it to "Six Feel Under" due to the setting and relationships amongst the main characters.

As the series begins, we see two police officers uncovering a dead body in a field in Skarnes Norway. It turns out Reinert (Andree Sorum) knows the woman. He used to date Live (Kathrine Thorborg Johansen). If she looks familiar, Johansen was in another Norwegian series- "Ragnarok".

When the coroner never arrives, the other officer Judith (Kim Fairchild) sends for the local funeral home. Unfortunately the woman's last name is Hallangen. It is her father Arvid (Terje Stromdahl) and brother Odd  (Elias Holmen Sorensen from "Lillyhammer") who are coming to transport the body because they are the only funeral home in town. And per the title, no one ever dies in this town. Operating a funeral home in Skarnes is probably not the most lucrative business opportunity.

Live wakes up on the autopsy table with a scalpel stuck in her chest. What could have possibly happened? The doctor suggest hypothermia. It seems Live has developed a craving for blood as well as enhanced strength and hearing. Her eyes also change color. It's a good thing Live's family is in the funeral home business since she is recently undead. Maybe she can drum up some more clients. Odd needs all the help her can get. He tries to conceal from his pregnant wife that they're in financial trouble and will probably lose their home.

I dont want to give too much else away. I will say keep your eyes peeling for the crematorium scene. I think it's one of the best in the show.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). An interesting take on the vamp genre especially since it takes place in a small town in Norway. I very much enjoy the quirky characters. My only complaint is that the show ends very abruptly. Will there be a season 2? If not, I'm left a bit unsatisfied There are lots of unanswered questions. Also we need much more of Judith (Kim Farichild) please.
