"What We Do In The Shadows" is finally back. Like all things these days, the new season was delayed due to covid. When we last save our favorite vampires (Nandor The Relentless, Nadja of Antipaxos, and Laszlo Cravensworth), they were on trial in front of the Vampiric Council for killing Baron Afanas. This episode is my all time favorite due to all the cameos. We have Tilda Swinton as head vamp (remember she was in "Only Lovers Left Alive"). We also have Evan Rachel Wood (Vampire Queen of Louisiana in 'Trueblood") and Danny Treijo (who was a vamp in "From Dusk Till Dawn"). Paul Reubens also appears. He was in the original "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" movie. The three original vamps from the "What We Do In The Shadows" movie (Taika Waititi, Jermaine Clement and Jonathan Brugh ) also make an appearance. The baby Laslo turned into a vamp years earlier is also on the Council. And to round out the group, Wesley Snipes Skypes in. He was a half vamp and vampire hunter in "Blade". Danny asserts that they're only counting his vote as half then. They mention Keifer (Sutherland). He couldnt make it due to available issues. He was in "Lost Boys". And obviously they couldnt get Brad (Pitt) or Tom (Cruise) because they're too famous. They were in "Interview With A Vampire".
While the three vamps are on trial, we of course know that it was really Guillermo who accidentally opened a door and offed the Baron with sunlight They are sentenced to death by sunlight. Luckily they escape thanks to Colin Robinson and Guillermo. We also learned last season that Guillermo is a descendant of Van Helsing and thus the mortal enemy of vamps. He is able to stop all the vampire assassins that are sent by the Council to Staten Island. Next they are invited to the theater but it's another trap. Luckily Guillermo saves the day YET AGAIN by killing the cast and half the audience.
In season 3's two part premiere, the Staten Island vamps must decide Guillermo's fate. They keep him locked up in a cell in the crypt in the meantime. What they dont know is he escapes every night and dutifully goes about his chores-- removing dead bodies etc.
Where would they be without Guillermo? Nandor, Nadja and Lazlo are always reluctant to say how important Guillermo is but he's saved their butts on numerous occasions. They eventually agree to make him their bodyguard. He had been waiting patiently for years to be turned into a vamp but we know that will never happen.
The Floating Lady (Kristen Schaals) arrives with news from the Vampiric Council. Since almost 70% of the tri state area vamps have been wiped out, they are now made local chapter leaders. Their official title is "Leaders Of The Vampire Council Of The Eastern Seaboard Of The New World". Quite a mouthful. Off they go to collect dues and other such boring administrative stuff. They get a grand tour of the Council's headquarters. There's all sorts of cool stuff including the world's largest collection of porno (which Laszlo of course starts perusing immediately). They also sees a cloak of duplication which Nandor wants to use to court a woman at his gym. He asks Laszlo to go as him but he gives it to Guillermo. Then Colin goes and then Lazlo. Let's just say none of the plan works out.
So what do we have in store for the rest of season 3? I assume we'll explore more of how Collin became an energy vampire. He's being more self reflective upon turning 100. Since the Sire (the original vamp) is locked up at the HQ, you can bet we'll learn more about him as well.
Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). "What We See In The Shadows" continues to delight as we explore the every day problems of four vamps and their familiar/bodyguard. I continue to love the stupid silly fun of this show. And with just 10 episodes total, it's a super fast watch. And the best news is that the show has already been renewed for a season 4 so we're get to spend lots more time with this crazy bunch.
