A new season of "Naked & Afraid" is finally upon us. I have been watching the show since the beginning and will continue to do recaps every two weeks. See previous reviews here: All Naked & Afraid Recaps
Episode 0 is entitled "New Season Exposed" and gives a preview of what the talent scouts, producers and crew do behind the scenes to follow two naked people in the wild for 21 days. Incidentally I wish they'd just number the episodes the normal way (because if you have a "0" episode it gets confusing. The crew describes many of the issues they have encountered:
- In Malaysia leeches were a big issue.
- During shooting in Africa a big ostrich wandered onto the set.
- Trench foot happens a lot.
- There are many treacherous animals such as the Fer-De-Lance snake in Costa Rica. The executive producer is still recovering even though he's had five surgeries and it's been a year since he was bitten.
- We see Tom and Carrie in Cambodia. They apparently do not like each other.
- Another Tom and Lisa are in Argentina in a cloud forest. They encounter the coldest temperatures that anyone has faced thus far on the show.
- In Nicaragua Jacqueline and Adam got along very well together (even though they are from very different backgrounds).
We meet Tim Smith who is responsible for assigning PSR (primitive survival rating) scores. I was interested to see this since it seems at times like participant's PSR scores are all over the place.
Luke beginning PSR IS 8.1, ending PSR 8.3.
Lindsey beginning PSR is 6.7, ending PSR 7.1.
They find a kudu (a type of antelope) which they think died a rabies. Rabies can be transferred from brain, spinal cord etc. They also find a cave that has lots of poop in it. It is disgusting but it keeps they from getting rained on.
Luke has extensive bow drill experience but initially still has issues creating fire. They are both frustrated by Lindsey's inability to contribute to the fire making. He finally gets a fire to start (by using cedar on cedar)..
They do not have enough energy to chase around large game. They finally find a nest and are able to eat five baby hammerhead storks (which is the only nourishment they have besides cactus and a few grubs and raisins.
It begins to storm again. The sandals they made from the kudu are now missing since the stomr came on so fast. They lucily locate them and head to the extraction point. Luke's sandals fall apart and the patch is filled with thorns. He has a very hard time but finally makes it through. Mission accomplished.
Grade: No grade is assigned since this is a reality show. Luke and Lindsey worked well together as a team. What Lindsey did not supply in skills she made up for with metal toughness and support for her partner.
