12 Monkeys Season 2 Episode 10 Review: Betrayal

There are only three episodes of "12 Monkeys" left this season. What other twists and turns does the show have in store for us?  If they're anything like "Fatherland", I can hardly wait.

Berlin 2016, Olivia is wheeled into an old decrepit building. Her assistant asks "what happened here?" Olivia replies "betrayal". Oh, this should be good.

In 2044 the Red Storm is within five days of annihilating the research facility. The goal is to find the last primary in New York in 1957 thus stopping the paradox from occurring. But Cassie and Ramse have other ideas. Against Jones' wishes, they convince Dr Adler to send them to the Emerson Hotel in 1961 instead. They're still hell bent on finding the Witness and killing him. Cole is not on board with the plan so they drug him. Bad friends. Bad, bad friends.

Cole seeks the help of FBI Agent Gale. Remember we save him back in 1944. Gale's comment to Cole of "we've know each other a long time" leads me to believe that's not the only time they met. They jump on the next plane to Germany.

Ramse and Cassie find Dr Kirchner (an ex Nazi) but are all captured by the Mossad. And yes, he's also Dr Leekie on "Orphan Black". All our team wants is intel on Titan and the Witness. But Mossad doesnt believe them.

Thank goodness Cole arrives before the heavy duty torturing begins. He says the info they're using (the CIA papers from the Keeper) are bogus. They are what Mossad later documented of their conversation with the time travelers. "You created your own clue genius. You're chasing your own tail." Cassie sees Kirchner's necklace. "It's the mark of the Witness."

Kirchner was visited by the Witness years ago. He was instructed to "create" the Messengers (so they would be immune to the plague). And then the Messengers would destroy time and the world. Kirchner agrees to take our guys to his lab. They try to exit East Germany. Gale sacrifices himself and dies in a hale of bullets in order for Cole to escape.

When they get to Kirschner's place, his "work" is actually a genetically engineered child.  He also shows them the map of the Witness with all their names on it. There's a another shootout. (Yes, there are several in this episode.) MessngerGirl (ie Vivian) arrives. Kirchner is killed for betraying the Witness. Ramse takes a piece of the "Words Of The Witness". It's the corner that lists its coordinates.

And now we know who the little girl is. It's...wait for it... it's Olivia. Oh snap! I didnt see that coming. In 2016, Olivia stands up in from the wheelchair, heals herself and heads out. But Olivia has lost her faith. "You told me the Witness would always be there for me. You lied. What else did you lie about? My place in the great cycle ends today-- at least with him (the Witness)."

So that's why Olivia is so hard to kill. Remember Jennifer previous shot Olivia and she fell into a dry pool. We also learn that Olivia was created by using an egg from Vivian. They then use Olivia to create the Messengers (including Vivian). So in essence, Olivia gives birth to her own mother. Olivia is also the sister of the Pallid Man. That is one majorly screwed up family.

Everyone splinters back to 2044. Cole has Cassie and Ramse arrested for their betrayal. All hope is lost as the storm gets closer. Deacon goes outside and embraces the Red Storm. You gotta feel sorry for the guy. Shot down by the woman he loves (Cassie), he has nothing else to live for. Cassie's side is that they only spent one night together and there are more important things to worry about. Can't say I disagree with that.

Favorite Quotes:
  • Olivia's assistant: "What happened here?" Olivia: "betrayal".
  • "We save the world by killing the one who destroys it"- Cassie referring to the Witness and Titan.
  • "It was just one night."- Cassie to Deacon about their romantic tryst.
  • Cole: "What did you do to me?" Cassie: "I'm sorry Cole, We had to."
  • "Cole, I've known you a long time now."- Agent Gale to Cole.
  • Agent Gale: "Nefarious characters seem to coalesce around you like bum hairs on a drain." Cole: "That's colorful."
  • "You created your own clue genius. You're chasing your own tail."- Cassie to Cole about the CIA papers they using to find Kirchner.
  • Olivia: "Where's Father (referring to Kirchner)?" Vivian: "His cycle has ended."
  • "You have a purpose-- a very special purpose."- Vivian to Olivia.
  • "You told me the Witness would always be there for me. You lied. What else did you lie about? My place in the great cycle ends today-- at least with him (the Witness)."- Olivia at Vivian's grave.
  • "There is no 'we'. Not anymore."- Cole to Cassie after her betrayal.

Grade: 4 3/4 Monsters (out of 5). "12 Monkeys" delivers another great episode. The reveal about Olivia was a real shocker. "Betrayal" is an apt title since there was a whole lotta scheming going on. Ramse and Cassie betrayed Cole (and possibly caused the end of humanity in the process). Olivia felt betrayed by the 12 Monkeys, the Witness and her mother. I'm very interested to see how all this pans out in the future... or is the past? Who can tell on this crazy show?
