12 Monkeys Season 2 Episode 12-13 Reviews: The End Of The Beginning & The Beginning Of The End (Season Finale)

In "Blood Washed Away" Cassie and Cole head back to 1957 to find the last Primary. In 2044 Ramse, Deacon, the Daughters and Young Jennifer (remember Old Jennifer died last week) are trying to fight their way to Titan to kill the Witness. Young Jen is not much of a leader. She gets her motivational sayings from fortune cookies. The Daughters think she's pretty lame.

Team Future gets to Titan but the Witnesses' minions kill them all (Ramse, Deacon, Whitley, Hannah, etc) by slitting their throats. Team Past cant find the Primary. It turns Charlie has been tricking them all along. His wife is the Primary. Charlie is actually the Messenger that traveled there from the future (along with Vivian-- Pale Man and Olivia's mother). Charlie stabs Melinda with the knife made from her sternum thus causing the paradox. Cassie is knocked unconscious and is in a coma for six months. When she awakens she shacks up with Cole.

It's the same house she saw when she drank the Red Forest tea. They have sexy times (yeah!) and reconcile themselves to spending the remainder of their lives in the past. They have no future to return to. I am confused about the paradox though? I thought that was supposed to end time as we know it. Obviously it didnt. What does it all mean?

In "Memory Of Tomorrow" Cassie tells Cole she is pregnant. I hope they can have a few days of happiness... but nope. Time begins to distort. Cole sees a woman in the street. He later finds her in a mental hospital. She is Lillian and she's Primary. She's also Madeleine Stowe who narrates this show AND played Kathryn Railly in the original "12 Monkeys" movie. What a treat for die hard fans!

Lillian tells Cole he can use the Red Forest tea to time travel without a machine. In order to save the world, he must get back to 1957 and stop the paradox. We see a number of flashbacks (including when Cole first met Cassie in season 1 episode 1). Cole finally gets back to the correct time and stops Charlie. He and Cassie then return to 2044. There they find Jones has gone Lady Rambo and defended the facility with a shotgun (all the while smoking a ciggy). She also gets a pet dog (which some people are calling Timex).

Cole, Cassie and Jones catch up with the Daughters. The guys have gone ahead. The Daughters dont want to help though. Jennifer tries to motivate them with movie quotes. She says such things as "They may take our lives but they'll never take our freedom!" and "This is our Independence Day." Those Daughters are moved by the weirdest things.

When they all get to Titan, the Witness is gone. His plague -mask-wearing-cult-members have laid a trap. It turns out Titan itself is a gigantic time machine. Cassie gets separated from the others and is splintered... somewhere.

Deacon sacrifices himself for Young Jennifer-- which seems fitting since he accidentally killed Old Jennifer. Jennifer runs off but is splintered to France in what looks like WWI. This should be interesting.

Meanwhile Ramse sees Olivia. She says she will take him to his son. Remember back when Sam splintered and he took someone's hand? It was Olivia's. Is she one of the good guys now?

That leaves Cole and Jones who splinter back to the facility. Jones says Cassie is in 2163. Cole says despite the danger he's going to "find her and bring her home".

Cassie is taken to a large meeting room. Each person is wearing a hood and a death mask. And in the surprise of the season, Pale Man tells Cassie she is pregnant... and her child will grow up to the be Witness. Everyone chants "Mother".

Wow I didnt see that coming. Poor Cassie. Is she going to nowmurder her own child? Wait! Does she even have a child? When Cole went back and killed the Messenger didnt that wipe out their little conception party? And if so, how does Cassie remember their time together? Man, this show makes my head hurt.

Favorite Quotes:
  • "I want to tell you a story about how the world ends. And the man who came back through time to stop it. And failed. For you see there is another traveler-- one who's both the architect and witness to our destruction. And the man cant see the other's design. The end of the beginning and the beginning of the end."- narrator.
  • "You're walking through a red forest. The grass is tall. It has just rained. Most of the blood has washed away. There's a house in the distance. Cedar and pine. You've been there before. You're not alone.. There is a man. You see him. You know him. You go to him. Like a memory of tomorrow."- Cassie remembering what Olivia told her after drinking the Red Forest tea.
  • "Look out for the strange ones. Being primary is like being schizophrenic. Look for people who twitch, talk to themselves, dont fit in."- Cole
  • "Not every caterpillar becomes a butterfly."- Cassie.
  • "1957-1959. This was home."- what Cole wrote on the wall of the pine and cedar home.

  • "Be excellent to each other."- Jennifer quoting 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure".
  • "They may take our lives but they'll never take our freedom!"- Jennifer quoting "Braveheart".
  • "Today we celebrate our Independence Day!."- Jennifer quoting "Independence Day".
  • "Death can be undone. Love cannot."- Lillian

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). I've said it many times before but "12 Monkeys' is SERIOUSLY the best sci fi show on television. It must keeps getting better and better. The finale finally gave us answers to questions that we've had for a LONG time. However, it then gave us more questions. I'm SO HAPPY "12 Monkeys" have been renewed. I cant wait to see what next year has in store.
