Colony Season 2 Finale Review: Get The Hell Out Of Los Angeles!

Season 2 of "Colony" has come to an end. And quite a season it has been. Here's the main happenings:

  • Will (thanks to help from Snyder) is able to locate Charlie in the Santa Monica bloc. As they scale the wall to get back into LA, drones attack and kill everyone except for father and son. Why are they spared?
  • Bram is sentenced to a labor camp. He is rescued by Snyder (who has been demoted as Proxy) before the entire camp is blown to smithereens in retaliation for several prisoners destroying a host ship.
  • Speaking of Snyder, his character has gotten an overhaul. Last year I considered him a snake in the grass but this season he actually has a heart. He's also handy to have around if you need someone to play all the sides against each other.
  • We get to see more of Helena Goldwin. Like Snyder, she's doing her best to survive a terrible situation. More of her please.
  • The Red Right Hand emerges as a vigilante force that will do whatever it takes to destroy the aliens and their collaborators. Bram joins up and kills a visiting dignitary (Ambassador King). In reality the RRH are all easily influenced teenagers led by a woman named Karen.
  • In the Green Zone, Katie's sister Maddie shacks up with Nolan. Does he genuinely care about Maddie or only himself? You can bet it's the latter.
  • Will gets a new partner (Bob Burke) at the Transitional Authority. He is highly suspicious of Will and eventually finds that Katie is working with Broussard. Will is arrested and the Bowman children kidnapped. Luckily Will manages to escape but not before stabbing Bob in the gut. Burke is too evil to die so he'll pop up later.
  • The Bowmans join Broussard after masked gunman break into their house and gun down Greatest Day Tutor Lindsey (sorry girl but you were IRRITATING!). They team up with Noa who parachutes into the LA bloc. She eventually tells them about a Rap deserter. They just need the gauntlet to connect to the Host's communication system.

This leads us up to the penultimate episode (which was so good it could have served as the series finale itself). Broussard and Katie meet with Karen in an attempt to get the gauntlet back. She's not playing so they decide to off her before she provokes the Hosts into nuking them all.

They attack the RRH theater hideout. Surprisingly Karen is quickly killed. I thought she was going to be the Big Bad for a while. Also surprisingly, Noa is shot dead. Maybe you guys should have asked her everything about her Rap friend BEFORE she was killed. But no one asked me.

Broussard stays behind to help the Bowmans escape. Drones arrive and splat the remaining RRHa but leave Broussard untouched. We now have two instances (one with Will and one with Eric) where drones stare them right in the eye but leave them alive. Are the men on some sort of exception list? If so, why? As you recall almost all of the military, special forces were systematically wiped out on the day of the Arrival.

Next the Black Jacks track our crew back to their hideout. Morgan is killed in the resulting battle. Alas Morgan, we never knew ye well. We'll add her to the mounting pile of supporting character bodies.

Nolan has sexy times with Maddie and then kicks her the curb. Snyder meets her at the TA and gets a full confession. He instead pins the stolen computer file on Nolan and has him shipped off to the Factory. Justice is sweet! We know Katie actually stole the file but we're still not sure what's on it. Maddie is set free to wander the neighborhood alone. She has no friends or family to rely on. Son Hudson was previously shipped off to some offspring-of-rich-people camp.

Snyder also manages to take down Proxy Alcala. He will serve in name only. Helena trusts Snyder to control things from behind the scene.

At the end of "Seppuku", Snyder and Helena sit outside looking up at the sky while having an alcoholic beverage. She gets a call from the IGA (International Global Authority). The Los Angeles bloc has been selected for "total rendition" (which means the city and everyone in it will be incinerated). Uh, oh. This can't be good. When Alan asks what the call is about, Helena replies "Just the usual politics."

As the finale (entitled "Ronin") begins, the characters have six hours before LA is no more. Synder eventually finds out the truth. Goldwin calms him by saying she has a new position at the IGA and he will be hre second in command. But what about the rest of the Los Angeles citizens? They will be put on buses and shipped to San Fernando bloc. After all, the aliens still need laborers. Is this true or all they all going to be delivered to the Factory?

In other news, we've been waiting two years for a closer look at the aliens. Surgery is performed by a nervous guy and watched some equally frazzled onlookers. If they screw this up everyone is dead. No pressure! The "surgeon" opens the alien's headgear, takes a small sphere that was transported from another Host and puts it into the new body. Looks like it works since the creature sits up. Is the sphere an interface with aliens who are all still on their ships? Do the aliens even have bodies like us?  Are they flesh and blood or just some electronic beings? So many questions!

The Bowmans desperately plan their escape. They will give Snyder the gauntlet in exchange for safe passage out of the city. Alan surprisingly tells them he wants to leave as well. Why does he not take Helena's job offer? Maybe it's just a long con. And once again everyone is after the stupid gauntlet. I'm getting tired of that thing. When the others leave, Broussard stays behind. I seriously hope this isnt the last we see of this badass character!

There's a tense standoff at a checkpoint where our guys finally convince the Red Hats they're all about to be annihilated. Host ships assemble over LA. Maddie is in corralled with lots of others in a warehouse. She knows she needs to leave ASAP but it's too late. They go outside. It's a beautiful day other than the ships that are about to kill them all. Maddie looks up and a tear falls from her her eye. Meanwhile the Bowmans drive away and see the ships in the background. Snyder secretly takes of tracker out of his pocket and turns it on. Hmmmm. Will LA be saved at the last minute? Is this the end of Maddie? Thank goodness this show is renewed for a season 3 or we'd never find out.

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). An excellent finale and an overall great season. I was worried that the show might fizzle in it's sophomore year (as many do) but I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm still enjoying watching the Bowmans try to keep their family intact and escape as well as Snyder trying to continually save his own ass. I also love Broussard and hope we see much more him next year.
