Killjoys Season 3 Finale Review: The Long Awaited Dutch Vs Aneela Smackdown

On the surface, "Killjoys" may first appear to be a space procedural. Dutch and the Jaqobi brothers are space bounty hunters. "Killjoys" could have gone the way of "Law & Order" and become a "catch a bad guy each week" show. Instead, I'm happy to report that they went an entirely different direction. In season 3 we see the beginnings of an all out war between the humans and the Hullen.

We also get a deep dive into the show's mythology and Dutch's origin story. The five second overview is as follows. Dutch was created out of the green goo by a very lonely Aneela (after Aneela was locked in a cube by her father Khylen). Dutch (original name Yalena) is in fact Aneela BEFORE all the bad stuff happened to her (and she went a little cray cray). Aneela then introduced Yalena to Khylen. Or did he kidnap her? I'm not really sure. That Khylen is way shady.

The finale (which is aptly titled "Wargasm") begins with a voiceover by Dutch: “The universe has a memory. That’s all time really is. Our whole life to hold in moments, the sweet and sour, the kisses and the scars, our beginnings and goodbyes, all written down in time. Recorded, so the universe will know we were here, so we won’t be forgotten. We are all made of memories.” Uh oh. Every time there's a voiceover I worry someone will die... but more on that later.

Our heroes are scattered in several different locations. Pree and crew are on Leith setting up a sonic device that will disable the Hullen's tech. There are a number of RAC agents (ie the Cleansed) in Hullen ships. Fancy Lee and Turin are both in the fight. Aneela sneaks onto Dutch's ship. She pretends to be her and kills. Alvin the monk. But she's not fooling Johnny. Luckily she only manages to stab him in the shoulder (or was that on purpose).

Dutch is kidnapped and quickly carried away. In the Necropolis Dutch and Aneela finally go toe to toe. Dutch believes that if she kills Aneela she herself will die... so that's quite a pickle. During the fight, Dutch sticks Aneela with a needle courtesy of Zeph. Aneela then sees Dutch's memories saying "You're what's been missing in my head". I didnt realize that Khylen had removed all the good memoriesfrom Aneela. Yes, Aneela is bonkers but this explains a lot. I actually feel sorry for her. Then in a surprise twist they decide NOT to kill each other (at least for now).  Kudos "Killjoys". I definitely didnt see that coming. .

In the final scene, Aneela and Dutch enter the Green. They wash up on a shore. Aneela explains this is where all their memories are stored. Khylen is there. Remember he's dead IRL. Khylen gives each a dagger. Off they go to find The Lady In The Green (who is apparently the REAL Big Bad since both the Hullen and Aneela have relinquished the title). The Lady wants OUT of the Green. Everyone else thinks that's a super bad idea.

Another thread that will be left over for next season is Della Seyah Kendry and her baby (which is supposedly D'Avin's). She was impregnated by the Hullen thanks to some invention Aneela came up with? No, I dont understand either. Just roll with it. I was worried Kendry was going to get the axe this episode (despite being majorly preggo). Luckily she survives. I'm interested to see how Kendry and Aneela's relationship will play out. Do the two really have feelings or are they just using each other? Kendry also has one of the best lines in the season when she says "Every proper villain is someone else's hero". She may be a murderous, power hungry snake but the girl has a way with words.

The Last Supper (AKA "Killjoys" Style)

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). A good solid finale with a very interesting twist (when Aneela and Dutch decide to hold off on killing each other to find another baddie). I continue to like the snarky dialogue as well. It definitely adds to the show.  Kudos to Hannah John-Kamen for doing double duty much of the season. I love her in both roles! Last but not least, congrats to the special effects team. The spaceship fight scenes were top shelf.

Now would be the time when I would normally say "I hope 'Killjoys' is renewed for next year". Good news. Not only has it been renewed for a fourth season but a fifth as well. Yeah! I can't wait to see what 2018 has in store for our favorite killjoys.
