Sense8 Series Finale: A Beautiful Ending To A Ground Breaking Show

"Sense8" was canceled by NetFlix after season 2. An outpouring of vocal fan support was rewarded with a two and a half hour series finale which aired in June 2018.

If you're unfamiliar with the premise of the Lana and Lilly Wachowski show, it follows a group of sensates (homo sensoriums) who, despite being scattered across the globe, are all psychically connected. Each was born at the same moment but is unaware of their special abilities until Angelica "births" them. The eight operate as a unit and can draw on each other's thoughts, feeling, and skill sets. They include: Lito in Mexico City, Sun in Seoul, Will in Chicago, Riley in Iceland, Wolfgang in Berlin, Kala in Mumbai, Capheus in Nairobi and Nomi in San Francisco. Given the worldwide locations (and the large number of primary actors), the show was extremely expensive to make--costing some $9 million dollars per episode.

When we last saw our gang, they were still attempting to evade Whispers and the BPO. Wolfgang has been captured by the mysterious Chairman. The cluster gathers in Paris to try to get him back. They kidnap Whispers and want to trade him for Wolfgang. A chick with a tree tattoo on the back of her head (Bodhi)  directs the group to Lacuna (where some sensates hang out free from human interaction). We meet Whisper's "mother". She says Whispers murdered everyone else in his cluster.

Jonas, who has been playing a long game, finishes what Angelica started and blows up the facility where Whispers kept his zombie drones. He was doing this in a bid for immortality.

The sensates eventually manage to retrieve Wolfgang but Kala gets shot in the process. She almost dies but luckily can psychically tell Wolfgang and Raj how to save her. Jonas shoots the Chairman dead.

Whispers and Lila attempt to escape via helicopter. Wolfgang takes them down with a rocket launcher. That was quick. Fine with me since I personally never really cared that much about the mythology of the show. And now we get to what we like best about "Sense8"-- sensate interaction.

There is a joyous wedding ceremony for Nomi and Amanita at the Eiffel Tower (thanks to the new BPO leader). She says "This wedding is proof that for all the differences between us and all the forces that try to divide us, they will never exceed the power of love to unite us." All of the senstates are there with their families. Ever Nomi's non-supportive parents show up. Her mother has some "special brownies' and decides she loves her after all. Not buying that quick 180, but it's a nice sentiment.

The series ends with each person having sex with their significant other. Since they are sensates this turns into a mind orgy. Nomi and Amanita and together, as is Cephaus and Zakia, Lito and Hernando, Sun and new beau Mun, Will and Riley, Wolfgang and Kala and Rajan.

The final scene is a title card that reads "For Our Fans". How sweet.

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). Wonderful! The series finale is everything fans could hope for. Sense8" is ground breaking in it's depiction of people/cultures we dont typically see on American television-- both in it's global focus and it's character's orientations. We have transgendered characters, gay characters and everyone across the spectrum. The show succeeds in reminding us, that despite our differences, there is beauty in humanity's interconnectedness. And that's a lesson we could all benefit from these days.
