In The Dark Season 1 Review: An Interesting Lead Character And Enough Twists Keep Me Coming Back For More

The NetFlix series "In The Dark" features a blind woman named Murphy (played by Perry Mattfeld). She is trying to investigate the possible death of her friend Tyson (Thamela Mpumlwana). Don't confuse this show with "Into The Dark" (the Hulu horror anthology) or "Dark" (the NetFlix German import about time travel). "In The Dark" previously aired on the CW and was created by Corrinne Kingsbury. She also serves as showrunner.

We meet Murphy's bestie and roommate Jess (Brooke Markham), eventual boyfriend Max Parish (Casey Deidrick), coworker Felix (Morgan Krantz) and parents Joy (Kathleen York) and Hank (Derek Webster). They all work at Guiding Hope (except the boyfriend). It's an org that trains seeing eye dogs. Her parents own the business.

I like "In The Dark" for several reasons. First, they did extensive work to make the main character believable. They have blind writers on staff as well as a blind consultant. Perry spent considerable time with her before filming. There was some controversy over whether a blind actress should have been chosen for the role.I'm not sure how I feel about that TBH. Also, the character of Murphy is a complicated one. She a hard drinking, antisocial woman prone to one night stands. She's not really that likeable at times. People around her tolerate Murphy in spite of herself. That's what makes her a good antihero. I don't think we've seen a person like Perry on TV before.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). I found "In The Dark" to be an interesting story about a complicated blind woman who is determined to find out the truth regarding her best friend's disappearance (and possible murder). With 13 episodes, it's a relatively fast watch. I wont give away the specifics of the story but, suffice to say, there are enough twists and turns to keep me coming back. The mystery of what happened to Tyson is much bigger than ya think. And Murphy and seeing eye dog Pretzel get into some pretty harrowing situations. The show has already been renewed for a season 2 so we know Murphy's story wont end here.
