"What We Do In The Shadows" Season 5 Review: Be Careful What You Wish For

Warning: Heavy Spoilers Ahead. Turn back now if you havent seen season 5 of "What We Do In the Shadows".

For those who arent's in the know, "WWDTS" is about a group of vampires trying to live their best lives in a nondescript house on Staten Island. There's Nandor The Relentless, Nadja of Antipaxos, and Laszlo Cravensworth. There's also Colin Robinson. He's a different kind of vampire. He's an energy vampire. Guillermo serves as Nandor's familiar but basically takes care of everyone and the house. To make things interesting we found out in season 3 that  Guillermo is a descent of Van Helsing (and thus is the sworn enemy of all vampires). The vamps are joined in season 4 by the Guide. She desperately wants to be accepted by the others but they ignore her for the most part. The Baron and the Sire also drop by from time to time. Nanja's "human ghost" (dont' ask.. it's complicated) also inhabits a doll that looks just like her.

An overarching thread since the show began is Guillermo's quest to be a vampire. Nandor says he will turn him when the time is right. But he never does. At the end of season 4 Guillermo finally gets store clerk Derek to make him a vamp instead.

Much of the time this season has Guillermo exploring his newly developed vampire powers (and trying to keep his secret from the others). Guillermo is kinda in a "no mans land". He has some powers but is not completely a vamp. He can still eat food and go outside during the daylight. It remains to be seen how his Van Helsing blood will affect the transition.

Lazlo eventually finds out and conducts several experiments with Guillermo's DNA. He ends up with a bunch of little Guillermo hybrids including frogs, pigs, etc. Too funny

Other story lines this season include:

  • Collin Robinson (back to his adult self) runs for Comptroller. He enlists Evie to pose as his wife. The two energy vampires suck the life out of everyone around them. One of my only complaints about the show is there arent more of the energy vamps. I just love them.
  • Nadja takes Guillermo to a familiar urgent care. The doc finds out what Guillermo really is and says he has to put him down. Nadja saves him by going all bad ass. Great fun.
  • There is a water main break outside the vamps house. And of course this group can NOT keep a low profile. They try mass hypnosis on everyone watching the show and end up being the anchors on the evening news. Too funny!

All the vamps find out about Guillermo. Nandor vows to kill Guillermo and then himself. Not being changed by one's master is the worst thing a familiar can do.  He has betrayed Nandor and also hurt his feelings (even though Nandor has a hard time expressing them).

Guillermo eventually confirms that he doesnt want to be a vampire. Nandor always knew this deep down inside. Guillermo is too good a person to kill innocent people for blood. Nandor conducts a fake ceremony to convert Guillermo back. Instead Derek gets stabbed in the heart with a stake.

Grade:  4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Despite being a little long in the tooth (pun intended), "What We Do In The Shadows" is still great fun. This season has Guillermo struggling to become a vampire but it's not all it's cracked up to be. The show has been renewed for at least one more season. Hopefully "WWDTS" will give our favorite vamps the sendoff they deserve.
