Colony Series Finale Review: Sadly Never Lived Up To It's True Potential
I LOVED season 1 of "Colony". The husband and wife interaction (Will and Katie), the alien occupation, the constant scheming of the humans (Snyder), and the resistance fighters (Broussard) kept me coming back. See my reviews here. Season 2 was OK but didnt reach the heights of it's freshman year. Unfortunately season 3 hit a wall (and it's not the one surrounding the Los Angeles bloc). Shows about alien invasions should at least feature the occasional ET. Not here. It's just talk, talk and more talk. Behind the scenes, the show's production moved from LA to Vancouver (and it changed time slots). None of this helped "Colony's" momentum.
At the beginning of season 3 the Bowmans are making their way to Seattle. It takes way too long to get there. Charlie is surprisingly killed off along a way. Kudos to "Colony" for going there. Kids typically get a free pass on most shows. Bram and Gracie are still alive and kicking. Of course the family isnt sure who to trust in Seattle. I say dont trust no one (just in case).
An interesting twist is thrown into the mix. We find out that the first aliens (Hosts) arrived on Earth because they were fleeing even meaner aliens (Predators). Also Hosts are some sort of AI or robotic bodies where individual's consciousness has been uploaded. OK then. This has potential.
Kynes (Wayne Brady) is in charge of the Seattle bloc. We're never really sure what he's up to. It turns out he is a good guy. He's been working on reverse engineering alien technology and organizing a group of outliers (human fighters) to take the aliens down. Of course Kynes gets ousted and Synder takes his place (because the guy is a weasel).
In the finale the war FINALLY begins. Helena and some of the TA workers are hold up in an underground bunker. People start dropping around her. Helena runs for the door but is trapped. The cloaked figure reveals itself. I'm confused. Is it a Host or a Predator? I'm not sure. Either way it looks like Helena is definitely dead though.
We also learn that the Factory on the moon was blown up and there are no survivors. That means Amy's boyfriend and Katie's sister are dead. Bram takes Grace and threatens to turn his mom into the IGA. Will and Katie are at odds. Their family has completely fallen apart. I'm not sure how they could recover at this point.
Snyder tells Wills the Hosts must receive 150 Outliers or they will not defend the Seattle Colony. Will eventually volunteers with others. They will be put into pods and transported to the alien ship to help the RAPS. That leaves Broussard in charge of the other ground soldiers.
Snyder orders the Seattle gates closed immediately. Synder and Broussard see fireballs attack the city's protective dome. It appears to hold (at least for now). Katie sees this too but she is outside the wall (so we're not sure if she will survive or not).
Grade: 3 Monsters (out of 5). Unfortunately "Colony" lost it's way in season 3. I still love the actors (particularly Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies) and the premise. But the location change and slow plodding killed "Colony" in the end. USA announced "Colony" was canceled before the finale aired. Too bad the show was never able to live up to it's true potential.
