Mary Kills People Season 2 Review: I Needed More

After a strong first season (see my reviews here), "Mary Kills People" hits a slump in it's sophomore year. The cast continues to be  excellent-- particularly Caroline Dhavernas. The story however is a bit flat. After barely escaping the police and removing bad guy Grady, Mary continues to provide end of life counseling (ie assisted suicide services). I'm not sure she could quit now if she wanted to. Mary is an adrenaline junkie.

Des spends a brief stint in prison and then returns to Mary's side. Mary's sister Nicole also joins the family business. Of course the hospital, police and the rest of Mary's family are ever closer to learning her secret. Mary's relationship with cop Joel/Ben is a strange one. How long before he puts her behind bars? There's only so often he can look the other way.

The Big Bad this season turns out to be none other than Grady's sister Olivia (Rachelle Lafevre). You might remember her from "Twilight" and "Under The Dome". She's a drug lord and wants her husband Travis offed by Mary. Why cant she just pay someone to kill him? It's not like she doesnt have connections. Whatev!

What I had hoped to see this season was more about Mary's past and motivations. Why is she so addicted to this job even when it's ruining her life? Yes, I know she's doing some of it for the greater good but there's also an element of danger that she loves. Remember, a 16 year old Mary helped her depressed mother commit suicide. That's gotta damage a young psyche.

Alas, we dont learn much more about Mary in season 2. We do however get some strong performances from the teenagers on the show. Daughter Jess and psycho frenemy Naomi continue to dance around each other. Naomi becomes jealous when Jess meets and begins to have feelings for new girl Heather. Then there's some tense moments as the police again close in. The show ends with what appears to be a shocking twist. It is all misdirection or did one of our main characters just bite it?

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). "Mary Kills People" season 2 was just released on Hulu. It's a quick watch with only episodes. The cast is great. I just wish they had better material. It raises some interesting and important questions in regards to quality of life. I was just hoping for more--- more back story on our main characters (especially Mary) and more drama when the fur started to fly. If there a season 3 I might turn in but I really hope they step it up in the story department.
