Wynonna Earp Season 3 Premiere Review: Now With Vampires And Sexy Fog

After what seems like a LONG break (it was actually only eleven months), "Wynonna Earp" returns for a new season. It airs on the SyFy channel Fridays at 9 PM ET. I've said it many time before but "Wynonna Earp" has one of the most loyal fan bases out there. It is in part because the cast/creators are so receptive to their audience-- showing up at all the comic cons, being extremely active on social media, etc. It's also because there's really nothing like "Wynonna Earp" on TV. It's totally campy, at times scary and always heart felt. "Wynonna Earp" is so much more than just a show about a chick with a gun killing demons.

Last season Wynonna had baby Alice Michelle (who was quickly whisked outside the Ghost River Triangle for her own protection). It's been some 19 weeks since the end of season 2 and Wynonna is getting back into shape (thanks to lots of late night training with Doc).  He is suffering from the fact Alice is gone as much as Wynonna is. Too bad these two kids cant just talk to each other--like normal couples.

A bus load of vamps show up and are welcomed into Purgatory by Nedley. Nedley is why we cant have nice things! The vamps are there to pay homage to Bulshar. Did anyone notice that they're all wearing grills? I personally prefer my vamps with actual fangs. The vampires easily glamour everyone except for Dolls (cause he's a dragon), Doc and Wynonna. The later two might be because they died previously? I'm not sure.

In case you've forgotten about the cult. Remember the Widows resurrected Reverend Clooties last season. Now he's intent on torturing the Earps.  Wynonna secretly goes to visit Mama Earp in prison. Michelle asks the voice she hears to promise to protect her daughters.

Nicole thinks she is the sole survivor of the cult (which has been operating since the 1920s). Say what? I hope we FINALLY get some of Nicole's backstory. All we know now is that she has an ex-wife. In other WayHaught news, Nicole and Waverly continue to be super cute together. They must be protected at all costs!

Team Earp dispatches with most of the vamps with some sharpened chair legs. Will more be back later? I like the idea of vampires (and other supernatural creatures) showing up in Purgatory.

And at the end of the episode, Wynonna's crashes and flips end over end. An injured Waverly is drug away by someone. Who could it be? Mama Earp? Bobo? A Bulshar? Someone else? I guess we'll have to wait till next week to find out.

In Other News:

  • I'm digging Jeremy's cute little mustache.
  • Who is that new chick that tied Doc up in the bus? He referred to her as Contessa and implied they had some sort of previous relationship. I'm getting a Janelle Monae vibe from her veil.
  • Has everyone forgotten about Calamity Jane (Nicole's cat)? Can she at least make an appearance from time to time?
  • Wasnt Mama Earp outside the last time we saw her? How did she end up in jail? Or maybe she just wanders around wherever she wants.
  • How does everyone's hair always look so fabulous on this show? Asking for a friend.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). "Wynonna Earp" starts a new season with guns ablazin'. I cant wait to see more. It continues to be one of the funnest shows on television. And great news! At the SDCC it was announced that "Wynonna" has been renewed for a season 4. Yeah!
