The Tick Season 2 Review: "The Tick" Is The Superhero Show We Didnt Know We Needed

"The Tick" season 2 is currently available on Amazon. If you didnt watch season 1 (see my review here), a quick recap is in order.

Arthur Everest ((Griffin Newman) is a mild mannered accountant until he discovers a moth suit. This gives him super powers. Suddenly a guy in a big blue tick costume shows up. The Tick  (Peter Serafinowicz) may be one of the world's strangest super heroes.  Sure he's got powers but he's not the smartest guy in the room. This leads to some hilarious encounters. If, by this point in the description you think "The Tick" is a serious superhero show, you'd be sadly mistaken. "The Tick" is heavy on the satire. And that's why I love it.

Last year's Big Bad was The Terror (Jackie Earle Haley). While in hiding, he used his minions such as Ramses IV and Miss Lint to do his bidding. The City was unprotected after being abandoned by Superian (think bargain basement Superman). Arthur and The Tick had to step up. And it's personal with the Terror. Years ago he murdered Arthur's father and the superhero team Flag Five.

The duo's actions finally get them noticed by AEGIS (the local superhero organization). Arthur spends a lot of time taking tests and filling out forms but is eventually accepted into the group. Who knew being a superhero required so much red tape?

On a side note, in season 2 The Tick gets a new improved costume. Now he can actually turn his head and move. This leads to much more expressive story telling.

Other superheroes are introduced including: AEGIS head Tyrannosaurus "Ty" Rathbone (quite a name), Sage, BronzeStar and Flexon. The AEGIS break room has the best croissants ever. it's one of the perks of being a superhero. Meanwhile Miss Lint is trying to infiltrate AEGIS as the superhero Joan of Arc. Yara Martinez is a delight to watch. I'm so happy she's back and chewing up scenery.

Overkill (Scott Speiser) also returns with Dangerboat in tow (or is it vice versa). He continues to be a tormented assassin. His friendship/romance with Dot (Valerie Curry) develops. Loved the dance party! Speaking of Dot, she learns she also has superpowers (and doesnt have to play second fiddle to anyone). And remember Tinfoil Kevin? He's back and not as crazy as he once appeared. Everyone had a bigger role this season included Arthur and Dot's mother (and her long suffering husband). He also has a few secrets.

Arthur and Tick's mission this time around is to take down Lobstercules (yes, that is a giant lobster). Lobstercules is on a bank robbing spree with some accomplices (Maine fisherman of course). But the lobster is no ordinary villain. He turns out to be a she. The bad guys have kidnapped her babies and are forcing her to do their bidding. This leads to some hilarious lobster-baby-sitting scenes. Too funny!

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). "The Tick" offers a surprisingly satirical take on the superhero craze. I love it's humor and fun characters. These superheros are much preferred to many from the DC or MCU. And with just 10 episodes total (each under 30 minutes) the show is a small time investment. Sadly, "The Tick" has been canceled so odds are we must say goodbye to our loveable gang here. Watching "The Tick" has been a fun and unique experience. Spoon!
