American Horror Story Asylum Episode 13 Recap: Why Is Evil Staring At Me? (Season Finale)

And AHS: Asylum has come to an end with the aptly named episode "Madness Ends". I'm not sure how I feel about the conclusion. It might be "let down" but I'll report back after I have properly processed my feelings.

It was interesting to see Lana as an old woman. I'm glad she was finally able to come to terms with who she was and could be honest. She still sold out for fame and fortune though. If you didn't recognize it, Lana's expose was based on a real case(s) from the 1970s when the government started closing state hospitals due to horrific conditions: http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=dbiYJkiX-Dg&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DdbiYJkiX-Dg This is much more frightening because it's real.

The death toll was what I expected but not in the way I expected it:

  • Death  #1: Kit breaks Sister Jude out of the hospital. She lives with Kit and his alien hybrid babies until the Angel of Death kisses her on the lips. I thought these were the most touching scenes of the episode. Jude finally had some happiness and peace in her life. This time when AoD showed up, she was ready to go.
  • Death #2: The suicide of Cardinal Timothy (after Lana's Briarcliff expose accused him of medical experimentation and murder). Per Lana, Timothy was "the kind of man who lied to himself about being a liar".
  • Death #3 (sorta): Kit was dying of pancreatic cancer but the aliens whisked him away. The now grown alien hybrid babies were not worried about his mysterious disappearance.
  • Death #4: During the Old Lana / BF Jr showdown, we aren't sure who's going to die. BF Jr has a gun to Lana's head but she talks him down. She then takes the gun and shoots him in the head. Like father like son. What great acting by Dylan and Sarah!
  • Deaths #5 & 6, 7-9 explained: Adam Levine's arm was ripped off by BF Jr. He also killed Tatum Channing's wife. And he killed the three fake Bloody Faces.
  • Not Dead #10: And no mention of Pepper. Are we just supposed to forget about her? I refuse to believe she is really dead. Hopefully she went back to the aliens.

What I would have liked to have seen:
  • Smack down in Rome: Cardinal Timothy becomes Pope Timothy. Then all hell breaks lose. Jude, Lana, Kit, Pepper, Angel of Death and the alien babies vs Timothy, Mary Satan, Nazi Scientist and Crazy Santa. Would that have been a killer show or what!?? I may have to write a story on fan fiction.
  • MUCH, MUCH more Sister Mary Satan.
  • Pepper takes over the asylum and turns it into some sort of model program for the downtrodden.
  • All the woods mutants move into town and get government jobs.
  • Crazy Santa is pummeled by Jehovah Witnesses.
  • Some explanation of the aliens. Anything will do.
  • And what is the moral of the story? If you're too ambitious, bad thing happen and you become cold and callous? Lets face it, Lana's ambition got Wendy killed. Is it a commentary on the state of mental hospitals, women's rights, at rights and interracial relationships in the 1960's? Is Ryan Murphy trying to tell us something about extraterrestrials? Your guess is as good as mine. I do know that I will miss you Briarcliff...but not enough to check in.

Favorite quotes:
  • Lies are like scars on your soul. They destroy you- Lana to interviewer
  • There's nothing more stimulating than crazy people- Lana about her Briarcliff expose.
  • Lets get this over with, shall we- Lana to BF Jr who is there to kill her.
  • It's not you fault baby, it's mine- Lana to BF Jr before she shoots him in the head.
  • Just remember, if you look in the face of evil, evil's going to look right back at ya- Jude to Lana when she first arrives at Briarcliff and last sentence of the last scene.
