Wayward Pines Episode 8 Review: Friendliest Place On Earth My Ass!

"The Friendliest Place On Earth" begins with Ethan running into the hospital with Ben over his shoulder and Amy in tow. Both somehow miraculously survived the truck bomb explosion (despite being inches away from it). Let's face it. In real life they would either be missing body parts, horribly burned and/or very dead. Pam suggests a "fellowship gathering" in order to get the townsfolk refocused. It's mandatory (of course).

Meanwhile the conspirators scatter. Ted (the delivery guy) dies in the hospital. Eric dies in the woods. Kate is captured and jailed. Ruby returns to work in order for things to appear normal.

We see a flashback to the months after Kate was unfrozen. She knows right off the bat that something is amiss. David has her locked in a rubber room. She says "None of it's real. It's a Potemkin Village...They're fake cities built to impress...This government experiment, is it social or medical?" Kate is one smart cookie...but how did she know Dr Jenkins is really David Pilcher?

I Love You Pam! You Are Seriously The Best Thing About This Show.

Back in the present (well, our future) Pam interviews the surveillance volunteers. Have we met them before? If so, I dont remember it. Reggie tells Pam "I just dont want anyone to get in trouble for asking questions...It's just human nature to ask questions." Pam lies to David and says no one has violated protocol. But of course David knows the truth due to another hidden camera. Pam begs David not to kill Reggie. "If we start killing our own people in the name of saving humanity then we've lost everything." David makes an example of Reggie in front of the other volunteers by refreezing him. Well, at least he isnt dead (unless the power goes out). I'm beginning to think the place might be a lot better off if Pam was in charge. At least she seems to genuinely care about the volunteers.

Good At Science; Not So Good At Human Relations

Megan the Creepster arrives at the hospital. She plants the seed in Ben that Ethan is responsible for the bombing (because he previously let Harold go free). The new Wayward Pines School moto is most definitely going to be "clear and severe". Clear laws and severe punishments. Where can I get a tshirt with that on it? Theresa later confronts Megan about what she's doing with Ben. There's going to be a smackdown soon. I cant wait.

Yep I'm Still Rocking These Boots

Ethan tells Theresa about the specifics of the Easter bombings. Remember, we heard about it in the first episode. Ethan had captured a terrorist but the government made Ethan let him go. The baddie later caused the Easter bombings in LA and New York whic killed ~900 people. What this has to do with the rest of the show Im not sure-- except that history might repeat itself.

Why Am I Being Forced to Wear White After Labor Day? How Inhumane!

David visits Kate in jail. He thought she had made progress during her 12 years of captivity. Nope, she's been faking it the whole time. She wants to be free at any cost. David says "Its freedom or safety but not both." Kate replies with "And who appointed you to make that choice?" Why, David did of course.

Harold and some other guy (sorry I dont know his name) steal a truck. Harold returns to town saying he cant leave Kate. Aww, how romantic. "Other guy" rams the truck into the electrified wall surrounding the town. The front part of the cab gets through. He yells "We made it" and then is promptly eaten by the abbies. Haaa! That was funny. Dont go screaming "We've made it" until you're sure you really have M-A-D-E I-T.

Now that the fence is off, can the abbies get into town? I guess we'll find out next week.

Favorite Quotes:

  • "What kind of person sets off a bomb in the middle of town?"- Pam
  • "None of it's real. It's a Potemkin Village...They're fake cities built to impress...This government experiment, is it social or medical.?"- Kate to David about Wayward Pines.
  • "Dont worry. We'll get ya all fixed up."- a delightfully menacing Pam to Kate while she's in the psych ward.
  • "Its not a question of keeping people in the dark. It's a question of keeping them alive."- David.
  • "I just dont want anyone to get in trouble for asking questions...It's just human nature to ask questions."- Reggie to Pam.
  • David: "Its freedom or safety but not both." Kate: "And who appointed you to make that choice?" David: "I did!".
  • "If we start killing our own people in the name of saving humanity then we've lost everything."- Pam to David.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). There are only two episodes left in the series. How will it all end? Will the Abbies take over the town and destroy what's left of mankind? Will Ben and Amy settle down and start a family? Is all this a BIG FAT lie and something entirely different is going on? I hope it's the latter.
