Jessica Jones Episodes 4-13 Reviews: My New Favorite Marvel Adaptation (Season Finale)

While Marvel's other offerings (such as "Agents of SHIELD", "Daredevil", and "Agent Carter") are targeted more towards fanboys/girls, "Jessica Jones" seeks a more mature audience. It's themes include abuse, alcoholism, isolation and PTSD. Our heroine is an emotionally damaged, whiskey swigging, excessively snarky, reluctant do gooder. Over 13 episodes we see her attempt to combat the evil Kilgrave (ie the Purple Man) and live with what she did while under his control.

Krysten Ritter does an excellent job of making us feel Jessica's pain. She's a superhero but is helpless when it comes to Kevin Kilgrave. David Tennant is at the top of his game in this role. We first meet Jessica after she has escaped his clutches. I initially thought Kevin's mind controlling power was lame but quickly changed my mind. Being able to mentally control anyone/everyone may be the scariest power of all. He makes people do such horrible things as: repeatedly stab themselves/other, kill their parents, jump in front of traffic, etc. Jessica had to submit to Kilgrave's every whim and was repeatedly raped.

Trish/Patsy Walker (Hellcat in the comics), is a standout on season 1. Rachael Taylor knocks her portrayal of Jessica's BFF out of the park. She is loving and vulnerable and tough all at the same time. I soooo want to ship she and Jessica but I know they're just meant to be friends. Although Jessica saying "I love you" to Trish during the finale got my hopes up even further.

Other standout characters include:
  • Luke Cage (Mike Colter) makes an appearance as Jessica's indestructible sometimes love interest. Stay tuned for his spinoff coming soon to NetFlix.
  • Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss) was originally written as a male but I really enjoyed the altered character. She's as tough as nails and will do anything she has to to get what she wants.
  • Will Simpson (Will Traval) is one of Kilgrave's minions who eventually becomes Trish's bed buddy. He is not what he seems though and is part of some secret government program.
  • Hope (Erin Moriarity) was also excellent in her role as a poor girl caught up in Kilgrade's spell. She wont see a season 2 but that doesnt mean we won't see the aborted Kilgrave baby again.
  • Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) also makes a cameo. Remember "Daredevil" also takes place in Hell's Kitchen.
  • Malcolm (Eka Darville) is Jessica's drug addicted neighbor. They share a caring relationship and accept each other's flaws.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5) "Jessica Jones" is my new favorite Marvel adaptation. The story is a little slow at times but the acting is superb.  David Tennant is delightfully evil as Kilgrave. Rachael Taylor is also a standout as Trish. The fight scenes are great fun.

It's about time another female superhero got her own show. This makes three total-- Agent Peggy Carter (Marvel) and SuperGirl (DC) being the other two. "Jessica Jones" surprisingly says a lot after the long term affects of abuse and how it changes people's lives (even superheros).
