12 Monkeys Season 2 Episode 3 Review: 1944 Is Definitely On Point

"100 Years" has Cassie and Cole time traveling to 1944. They are in search of two Messengers (and were tipped off by the photo of themselves from the Emerson Hotel). All four parties attend a gala. The Messengers kill Thomas Crawford before Cole and Cassie can save him. It turns out they killed the wrong person though. The Messengers are actually looking for his son (Thomas Crawford Jr) who is locked away in a mental asylum.

Should We Call You Tommy Or Perhaps Alec Sandler?

Flash over to the younger Crawford. He is painting the same monkey pictures as Jennifer did back in season 1. Interesting. The baddies arrive at the hospital. The woman gives Cole ECT. Ouch! He tells Cassie to bring the boy or she will kill Cole. Tommy tells Cassie not to worry because today is his day to die. It turns out both Jennifer and Tommy are "primary" (meaning they can see/hear the future).

Tommy says "The Witness has spoken. I can hear him. I die today and his world of chaos and his forest of red will come to be. The Messengers need me dead. Because of what's in here. I help it think--- like your friend Jennifer. We keep the lines straight, the circles circling. We're the synapses in it's noggin, it's mind, interconnecting." Well, I'm not really how to interrupt all of this but at least we're getting some more intel.

This Is One Of My Favorite Pictures Of Jones

Back in 2044, Jones tells Ramse that she despises him for what he has done in order to save his son. She lets Deacon do whatever he wants to Ramse. Deacon takes Ramse into the woods and makes him dig his own grave.

Why Do They Use Flowers In Their Little Rituals? Remember Pallid Man?

In 1944 MessengerGirl (apparently her name is Vivian) stabs Tommy in the chest with a knife made of his own sternum bone (thus creating a paradox). In the woods in the future, all sorts of craziness happens. Red trees sprout and disappear. People dissolve into skeletons and then dust. Ramse and Deacon are not affected (I assume because both have been injected by Jones previously). Has the future turned all "Red Forest" until Cassie and Cole can do something to fix it?

This Was A Cool Scene

The paradox causes a huge explosion in 1944. When the police arrives Cassie, Cole, Tommy and MessengerGirl are all unconscious. I'm not sure who is alive or dead. It's safe to say Cole and Cassie are alive though (since they're the stars). Theyir tethers are however severed so they stuck for a while. Maybe they could use this time to process their feelings for each other... just a thought.

Timely Tidbits:
  • Tommy Crawford is played by Erik Knudsen who was Alec Sadler on another time travel show "Continuum".
  • How many primaries are there and do they all know about each other?
  • Wearing tight jeans in 1944 is a definite no-no. Remember in "Terminator" they had to travel naked. I guess time travel technology has improved since then.
  • Dr Ecklund's wink at Katarina when she asked him to turn the music down was priceless. More please!
  • Any guesses as to who the Witness is and if we've already met him/her/them?
  • How much longer before Cassie and Cole kiss and make up? I dont like it when they fight.
  • Who called Cole on the phone at the Emerson Hotel? This must be an important clue.
  • I still dont understand why more people arent watching this excellent show!

Favorite Quotes:

  • Cassie: "Oh my god, you like it here [meaning 1944]?" Cole: "What's not to like?... Would you like a whiskey sour?"
  • "The only failure is in giving up."- Tommy to Cole.
  • "The Witness has spoken. I can hear him. I die today and his world of chaos and his forest of red will come to be. The Messengers need me dead. Because of what's in here. I help it think--- like your friend Jennifer. We keep the lines straight, the circles circling. We're the synapses in it's noggin, it's mind, interconnecting."
  • "Last night's data showed these anomalies multiplying in the time stream. An increase of 80%. These levels are unprecedented. It's almost as if the structure of space/time is collapsing onto itself."- Dr Adler.

Grade: 4/12 (out of 5) Monsters. A very enjoyable episode. We finally get a few answers (thanks to Tommy). Turns out Jennifer isn't so crazy after all. The 1944 sets are beautiful as well. The 1940s aesthetic just cant be beat.
